Left Livid Over Obama's Offshore Drilling Announcement

[Updated and bumped] Reactions are now coming out fast and furiously, via Memeorandum.

The Obama administration is planning to set the stage for offshore drilling, eventually making America less dependent on other countries for our oil supply and the far left is already livid about it.

NYT:

The Obama administration is proposing to open vast expanses of water along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska to oil and natural gas drilling, much of it for the first time, officials said Tuesday.

The proposal — a compromise that will please oil companies and domestic drilling advocates but anger some residents of affected states and many environmental organizations — would end a longstanding moratorium on oil exploration along the East Coast from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean.

Under the plan, the coastline from New Jersey northward would remain closed to all oil and gas activity. So would the Pacific Coast, from Mexico to the Canadian border.

The environmentally sensitive Bristol Bay in southwestern Alaska would be protected and no drilling would be allowed under the plan, officials said. But large tracts in the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea in the Arctic Ocean north of Alaska — nearly 130 million acres — would be eligible for exploration and drilling after extensive studies.

Reactions are just starting to come out and via Huffington Post, protests are already being planned.

"Its like a kick in the face" says Jonathan Ruiz of Florida International University. Jonathan campaigned for Obama for fourteen months, and now he's livid about today's announcement by the administration to open half the east coast to offshore drilling.

SNIP

We aren't going to take this. A protest is planned for an event in Florida today where Newt Gingrich will be promoting drilling. Nevermind that he needs to entice people to come with free "Drill Here Drill Now Pay Less" bumper stickers to the first 1000 rsvps, this event shows how dangerously aligned the Obama administration is getting to the industry-cheerleading GOP.

Washington Monthly wants to know what Obama is getting out of this by way of GOP concessions, yet admits clearly that this is not such a surprise and Obama himself "expressed a willingness to incorporate this into a larger energy policy during the campaign."

Washington Monthly phrases that as "expressed willingness" and uses the words "alluded to "opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development" during the State of the Union."

As if Obama was conceding something, yet as the New York Times clearly points out:

Mr. Obama said several times during his presidential campaign that he supported expanded offshore drilling.

He stated he supported offshore drilling, it is not a concession, it is not a bargaining chip against the GOP, although Washington Monthly would like it to used as such, it is Obama going after something he wants, as he did with Obamacare, and not really caring one way or another who supports it and who doesn't.

Page 4 from the NYT text of Obama's State Of The Union Address:

But to create more of these clean energy jobs, we need more production, more efficiency, more incentives. And that means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country. (Applause.) It means making tough decisions about opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development.

He didn't just "allude" to it, he stated it clearly in the SotU.

Let's see if we can't answer that question anyway about what Obama will get for this...

His Obamacare bounce has bounced off without him and left him and his health care plan still seen negatively by the majority, Gallup and Rasmussen along with USA today confirms this.

Democrats are looking at a extremely political toxic atmosphere going into November and according to the latest CNN poll, 52 percent of Americans "said President Barack Obama doesn't deserve reelection in 2012."

51 percent of respondents disapprove of Obama's job performance, according to the same poll.

Top of the Ticket provides more:

A new CNN / Opinion Research Poll out this afternoon of 953 registered voters nationally finds Obama tied at 47% with any Republican candidate. Gee, if only Wendell Willkie was still around.

The same poll also finds a clear majority of Americans now believe that Obama is a one-term president.

Barack Obama does not come up for reelection until 2012, although many Democratic House members and Senate members will be fighting for their seats come this November.

Back to the NYT piece about offshore drilling:

But as a result of the Obama decision, the Interior Department will spend several years conducting geologic and environmental studies along the rest of the southern and central Atlantic Seaboard. If a tract is deemed suitable for development, it is listed for sale in a competitive bidding system. The next lease sales — if any are authorized by the Interior Department — would not be held before 2012.

2012... hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

If I were the cynical sort, I would entertain the idea that Obama is proposing this to garner a little more support from the Independents and Moderates that he and the Democrats alienated over the last year with his Obamacare.

Just because he proposes it, doesn't mean it will happen, doesn't mean Congress and the Senate will approve it and doesn't guarantee anything other than the optics would look good for him and perhaps help some vulnerable Democrats in November.

Dem Senator Admits Obamacare 'Political Folly'

Of course the Democratic Senator won't alow himself to be named, he would then have to suffer the consequences of Democratic leader's anger, but via Newsweek's The Gaggle, written by Howard Fineman, we see that certain Democrats voted for Obamacare, knowing they were voting against the majority of the populace and admits it was "political folly."

A Democratic senator I can't name, who reluctantly voted for the health-care bill out of loyalty to his party and his admiration for Barack Obama, privately complained to me that the measure was political folly, in part because of the way it goes into effect: some taxes first, most benefits later, and rate hikes by insurance companies in between.

The gaggle is also tracking the polls and not seeing any light at the end of the dark tunnel the Democrats have put themselves in.

Young Adults Suffer For Obamacare With 17 Percent Increase In Costs

The AP continues it's surprising foray into actually reporting the "news" instead of cheerleading the Obama administration, by explaining more of the ramifications of the new Obamacare law.

Under the health care overhaul, young adults who buy their own insurance will carry a heavier burden of the medical costs of older Americans — a shift expected to raise insurance premiums for young people when the plan takes full effect.

Beginning in 2014, most Americans will be required to buy insurance or pay a tax penalty. That's when premiums for young adults seeking coverage on the individual market would likely climb by 17 percent on average, or roughly $42 a month, according to an analysis of the plan conducted for The Associated Press. The analysis did not factor in tax credits to help offset the increase.

The higher costs will pinch many people in their 20s and early 30s who are struggling to start or advance their careers with the highest unemployment rate in 26 years.

Add this to the long list that has been started to other ramifications and Americans are starting to get a good look at how bad this bill actually is for America.

Flashback: Political Handicapper Charlie Cook- Rather Have Republican's Problems Than Democrat's

Quote of the Day- February 2010:

But if I had a choice of the Republican Party's problems right now or the Democratic Party's problems, I think you could triple the Republican Party's problems and I'd still rather have their problems than the problems facing Democrats.

Another takeaway from Cook- Health Care Is Obama's Iraq

I am curious to know if Cook, given the last month's events, would still make that same statement.

I am also curious as to his predictions for November given the latest generic ballot polls.

Note to readers- Polls are simply a snapshot in time at how voters feel at any given moment and any major event can drastically change those figures. In my opinion, the best use of polls is to watch for a pattern because patterns generally take more than one event to turn themselves around. Numbers may fluctuate, but patterns generally are a good indicator of where the path will lead in election years.

Initial Obamacare Bounce Gone

Polls conducted the day of or the day after Obamacare was signed into law showed a slight bounce in public opinion and were touted by proponents of Obamacare as a "sign" that the public was losing their opposition and would come to favor the plan that was passed by Democrats against the majority of Americans being opposed to it.

A week later, that bounce Obamacare enjoyed is gone, like it never existed and poll numbers are back to the original figures.

Example, USA Today was one of the initial polls that showed the bounce with 49%-40% plurality, a week ago, called the bill "a good thing.

Now- 50% call passage of the bill "a bad thing" and 47% say it was "a good thing."

"There was on the Democratic side a burst of enthusiasm after it passed saying, 'Ah, now voters are being won over,' " says Charles Franklin, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who studies polling. "The cumulating data this past seven days says that, no, a miracle didn't happen and the public didn't suddenly change their views on this. It means that the Democrats still face a tough sell of a public close to evenly divided on this and even slightly more opposed than in favor, and that difficulty didn't go away with passage."

A one-day poll taken immediately after a major event is subject not only to sampling error but also to very short-term effects, he says. On the day after the bill passed, he notes, "the news cycle was dominated by the positive side of the story and only a bit by the Republicans' rebuttal to that."

In the new survey, a slightly higher percentage of opponents say the vote will have a major impact on their choice in November's congressional elections: 31% say they are much more likely to vote for a candidate who opposes the bill; 25% say they are much more likely to vote for a candidate who supports it.

Clyburn: Reid's dealmaking cost Mass. seat

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's dealmaking lost a key seat in Massachusetts but eventually led to the right strategy to win the vote on landmark healthcare legislation, U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn said Monday.

Clyburn said the election of Republican Scott Brown to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's seat was a turning point in passing the overhaul last week. He said at the time, the Senate was pursuing a 60-vote strategy for the legislation to get around filibuster threats by Republicans.

To get there, Reid made several deals with lawmakers, including giving up the public option on insurance and giving $100 million in extra Medicaid money solely to Nebraska to help win support from that state's Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson. Dubbed the Cornhusker Kickback, it was eliminated in the revisions bill, but had caused a stir over such backroom deals that the Republicans pointed out.

"So he got 60 votes. Well, the problem is the Nebraska thing, more than anything else, caused the defeat up in Massachusetts," Clyburn said.

Slain Marine's Father Ordered To Pay Westboro Appeal Costs

Background:

October 2007- Albert Snyder said he had hoped for a private funeral for his son, Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder and instead what he received was his son's funeral turned into a circus by the Westboro fundamentalist church who picketed the fallen marine's funeral.

Snyder sued and won.

The jury first awarded $2.9 million in compensatory damages. It returned in the afternoon with its decision to award $6 million in punitive damages for invasion of privacy and $2 million for causing emotional distress

Now, March 2010, Albert Snyder of York, Pa., has been ordered to pay the appeal costs for Fred Phelps who is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Lawyers for the father of a Marine who died in Iraq and whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters say a court has ordered him to pay the protesters' appeal costs.

On Friday, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered that Albert Snyder of York, Pa., pay costs associated with Fred Phelps' appeal. Phelps is the leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, which conducted protests at the funeral of Snyder's son, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, in Westminster in 2006.

Lawyers for Snyder say the Court of Appeals has ordered him to pay $16,510.80 to Phelps for costs relating to the appeal, despite the fact that the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review the Court of Appeals' decision.

They say that Snyder is also struggling to come up with fees associated with filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court.

"We are extremely disappointed," said Sean E. Summers, an attorney for Snyder. He added that the U.S. Supreme Court will likely hear the case during its October term and make a decision in June of next year.

"The Court of Appeals certainly could have waited until the Supreme Court made its decision," Summers added. "There was no hardship presented by Phelps."

A travesty.

The Next Scott Brown?

Many of you may remember that we were the first ones to alert you to the possibility of electing Scott Brown in Massachusetts way before the first poll came out. That race was ignored by all the political pundits because obviously a Republican could not possibly get elected in the most Democrat state in the union to fill the Ted Kennedy vacancy. Well, here is another one for you and the election is two weeks away on April 13th. This special election is also on no one's radar because obviously the Democrat candidate will win. That is the conventional wisdom among the pundits. Well, it might be conventional but that does not make it wisdom any more than it did for Scott Brown.

This election is being held in Florida in congressional district 19. This is just as tough as Massachusetts was and probably even more so. If the Republican candidate, Edward Lynch, does not get some support and money immediately, the conventional wisdom will be right. People, this race is doable because the health care bill is still fresh in everyone's minds especially in Florida where it is extremely unpopular right along with its major supporter. The Democrat candidate has this little gem on his website:

Dear Friends, Last night, Congress made history by passing health care reform legislation that expands access to affordable coverage to 32 million more Americans. When President Obama signs this historic reform bill into law, the residents of Florida's 19th district will immediately begin to reap its benefits.

The Republican candidate has this to say about that:

First, let me state that I do believe that we need to make sure that every LEGAL American citizen has access to the best healthcare system in the world and that it is affordable for everyone. Let me also state that, after reading the bills that are being considered, if the healthcare plan was a good plan, I would let you know that. That being said, the proposals set forth in the house (HR 3200) and in the senate are very bad for America...

Given that this district has double the national average of senior citizens in it and in Florida those same citizens are opposed to Obama Care by a 65-25 margin, all we can say is: CHARGE. Send money right now to https://co.clickandpledge.com/sp/d1/default.aspx?wid=32307. If you live in Southern Florida's east coast, go here: http://electlynch.com/get_involved. Obviously the national Democrats did not get the message Massachusetts sent them so let's send them another one from Florida. Here is everything you need to know about this district:

Florida 19 House District

Sen Ted Deutch
Democrat Sen. Ted Deutch
Edward Lynch
Republican Edward Lynch (foreground)

FL-19
Florida 19 House District

Representative Wexler had represented this district since 1996 when he resigned this year to take another post. He did get a 38.93% margin in 2008 while McCain-Palin lost this district by a 31.5% margin. No Republican has ever been elected in this district since it was created in 1982. Under ordinary circumstances this district would be hopeless for Republicans and would not really be in play next November either. The fact that there is a special election on April 13th coming right on top of the passage of Obama Care says that these are no ordinary circumstances. Republicans always turn out much better than Democrats in special elections.

Almost one-third of the adult population in this district are 65 or older and they are very annoyed about Obama Care passing according to a poll taken by
Mason-Dixon Polling & Research. An article in the Miami Herald entitled Florida poll: Healthcare law hurts Obama, Democrats says this:

Only 34 percent of Florida voters support the new law while 54 percent are against it, according to the poll. Opposition is significantly strong among two crucial blocs: those older than 65 and voters with no party affiliation. Seniors disfavor the bill by a 65-25 percent margin, while independents oppose the law 62-34.

The poll, conducted last week, is the first to be taken in Florida since Obama signed the healthcare reform bill into law.

It shows that Floridians have a more negative than positive view of Obama by a margin of 15 percentage points. And they oppose his so-called ``cap-and-trade'' global warming legislation as well as the new healthcare law.

This being the case, this district is suddenly very definitely in play although we still have to rate it as only possible if the Republican candidate gets a lot of support and money very soon.

The Republican primary for this special election has chosen this candidate:

Next Year In Jerusalem!

By Findalis of Monkey in the Middle

Next Year In Jerusalem are the words that have ended each and every Passover sedar for the last 2000 years. It is in good times, a simple wish to have one sedar in ones life in the city of Jerusalem. In times of pogroms, and horror it was a prayer to The All Mighty, Blessed Be He, to redeem them to Israel, to Freedom as He did in the days of our bondage in Egypt.

To Barack Hussein Obama they are words that need to be changed:
March 23, 2010 By The Associated Press Shana Habbab (AP White House Correspondent)

(AP) — An unidentified Israeli official has confirmed that private discussions between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu included a strong request from the President that the upcoming Passover holiday not include the familiar refrain of “next year in Jerusalem”, citing the passage as provocative and unhelpful for future peace talks.

The Administration suggested replacing it with “next year in peace” or “next year in Israel”, but leaving the final wording up to both the Israelis and Palestinians.

Netanyahu is said to have balked at the request, indicating that the refrain dates back well before the UN Partition of 1947. The Prime Minister reportedly attempted to diffuse the situation by noting that the declaration lacks any political significance, adding that most people living outside of Israel just “say the words without having a real desire to live anywhere in Jerusalem.” He further explained that, “at most, they would like to come for the Passover holiday, but only staying at one of the hotels located in western part of the city.”
Last summer Pharaoh Obama President Obama demanded that Israel turn over the Old City to the Arabs as a goodwill gesture.  Benjamin Netanyahu sent a little gesture back.  There is no way, no how, no even understanding that will ever mean the purposeful destruction of Jewish homes, schools, synagogues, and even the Kotel.

ISRAEL WILL NEVER SURRENDER ANY PART OF JERUSALEM!

Yet Pharaoh will not listen.  He has harden his heart towards Israel, he has forgotten the words he spoke to the Children of Israel at the AIPAC Conference in 2008:
Let me be clear. Israel's security is sacrosanct. It is non-negotiable. The Palestinians need a state that is contiguous and cohesive, and that allows them to prosper — but any agreement with the Palestinian people must preserve Israel's identity as a Jewish state, with secure, recognized and defensible borders. Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided.
Oh how he lied!  He lied when he said that he would prevent Iran from developing nukes:
Former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton expressed concern Sunday that Washington was coming to terms with a nuclear Iran.

“I very much worry the Obama administration is willing to accept a nuclear Iran, that's why there's this extraordinary pressure on Israel not to attack in Iran,” Bolton told Army Radio.

The former envoy claimed that this pressure was the focus of last week's meetings in Washington between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyhau and US officials, including President Barack Obama.

Bolton said that the Obama administration had embraced the view, prevalent in Europe, that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was the key to the resolution of all other conflicts throughout the Middle East, including the Iranian conflict.
Ah yes, the old stand-by: BLAME THE JEWS FOR EVERY PROBLEM!

Just the behavior one would expect from the disciple of Jeremiah Wright! And guess who was visiting recently:

Louis Farrakhan and family

I wonder what he asked Pharaoh for?  To run the Death Camps?

Look his old neighbor who was just another guy on the block (Strange neighborhood. Housing a known domestic terrorist couple.)  Yes Bill Ayers is back!

I thought he didn't know him very well.

And of course the Good Reverend is back:

Didn't Pharaoh break with Wright's church?  I guess not!

I wonder if he promised him the looting of Jewish property for his own gain.

Tonight when Obama and his kapos will make a mockery of the sacred meal while Pharaoh is planning how to destroy the Jews of Israel.

54% of the nation's likely voters still favor repealing Obamacare

Rasmussen has conducted a poll, one week after Obamacare has passed and found that 54% of the nation's likely voters still favor repealing the new law.

Perhaps the headlines, from the late-to-the-party media highlighting the laws faults and ramifications have something to do with the majorty opposing Obamacare.

As previously mentioned those headlines include "Democrats threaten companies hit hard by health care bill," along with "Coverage Now for Sick Children? Check Fine Print," and "Health overhaul likely to strain doctor shortage."

From Rasmussen:

One week after the House of Representatives passed the health care plan proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats, 54% of the nation's likely voters still favor repealing the new law. The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 42% oppose repeal.

Those figures are virtually unchanged from last week. They include 44% who Strongly Favor repeal and 34% who Strongly Oppose it.

Repeal is favored by 84% of Republicans and 59% of unaffiliated voters. Among white Democrats, 25% favor repeal, but only one percent (1%) of black Democrats share that view.

Only 17% of all voters believe the plan will achieve one of its primary goals and reduce the cost of health care. Most (55%) believe it will have the opposite affect and increase the cost of care.

As companies continue to report corporate writedowns because of Obamacare and if the media continues to report the massive problems associated with the Democrats new law, expect those numbers opposing Obamacare and favoring repeal to rise.

Another surprising number comes later in the Rasmussen report:

A number of states are already challenging the constitutionality of that requirement in court, and polling data released earlier shows that 49% of voters nationwide would like their state to sue the federal government over the health care bill.

Overall, 41% of voters believe the new health care legislation will be good for the country, while 50% believe it will be bad for the country.

Obamacare is going to be a huge factor in how people vote in November's elections and considering Congress is now at a 72 percent disapproval rating, figures not this low since 1994, change is definitely coming and not the change Obama promised in 2008.

.

Obamacare Problems Still Top The News

Headlines include "Democrats threaten companies hit hard by health care bill," along with "Coverage Now for Sick Children? Check Fine Print," and "Health overhaul likely to strain doctor shortage."

Acting surprised that Obamacre is finally being reported on, Democrats are upset that companies have come out with the news announcements that they will be forced to claim millions in writedowns due to the passage of Obamacare and top Democratic officials are threatening those companies for speaking the truth, publicly.

Fine print in the Obamacare bill makes it unlikely that all children with pre-existing conditions will be automatically covered until 2014, if then and last but not least, it looks like there is a doctor shortage and Obamacare promises to make it worse.

Funny but I remember about reading many of these things BEFORE Democrats jammed Obamacare down America's throat against the will of the majority of Americans.

Either Democrat didn't bother reading their own bill, they simply didn't care about the ramifications or they are incompetent... perhaps all three.

Time to replace the bums.... November is coming and Americans have their chance to remind Washington lawmakers exactly who they work for.

.

Terrorism In Russia

37 dead in Russia after two female terrorists blew themselves up on a Moscow dubway, injuring over 100 and killing 37 people.

The head of Russia's main security agency said preliminary investigation places the blame on rebels from the restive Caucasus region that includes Chechnya, where separatists have fought Russian forces since the mid-1990s.

The first explosion took place just before 8 a.m. at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow. The station is underneath the building that houses the main offices of the Federal Security Service, or FSB, the KGB's main successor agency.

A second explosion hit the Park Kultury station about 45 minutes later.

Russian police have killed several Islamic militant leaders in the North Caucasus recently, including one last week in the Kabardino-Balkariya region. The killing of Anzor Astemirov was mourned by contributors to two al-Qaida-affiliated Web sites.

Malkin flashes back to 2004 and 2005, reminding us Islamic terrorism isn't new to Russia, it just isn't reported on like it should be.

Someone Tell Charles Schumer He Has It Backwards

Charles Schumer, Democrat, predicts that Obamacare will work in Democrats favor in November and those opposed will be hurt during the midterm elections.

Florida polls are our first indication that Schumer has it backwards and it is Obamacare proponents, and those that jammed it through against the will of the majority of Americans, that will suffer.

Miami Herald:

Florida voters dislike the new healthcare law so much that President Barack Obama and the state's top Democrat, U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, are paying a hefty political price, according to a new survey and analysis by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.

The negative sentiment for Nelson was especially ``eye-popping,'' Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker said. He said elder voters were once a reliable base of support for Nelson, but no more.

Nelson is counting on the fact that his reelection isn't until 2012 and hoping that the anger will die out by then.

It won't because elder voters, those that were the reliable base of support, will be the ones suffering the ramifications of Obamacare the soonest.

It is no surprise that Schumer is trying to spin it the way he is, but if he truly believes his rhetoric, he needs a shrink.

Americans Know Tea Party Members Understand Issues Better Than Congress Does

Rasmussen:

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 52% of U.S. voters believe the average member of the Tea Party movement has a better understanding of the issues facing America today than the average member of Congress. Only 30% believe that those in Congress have a better understanding of the key issues facing the nation.

As Obamacare Damage Rolls In, Democrats Act Surprised

AT&T, Deere & Co., Caterpillar, AK Steel, 3M, Valero Energy and Verizon are simply the tip of the iceberg on corporations that are announcing that due to Obamacare they will be forced to make writedowns. (Via WSJ)

AT&T- $1 billion
Deere & Co.- $150 million
Caterpillar- $100 million
AK Steel- $31 million
3M- $90 million
Valero Energy- up to $20 million
Verison has already warned employees that their health care costs will now have to rise.

This wholesale destruction of wealth and capital came with more than ample warning. Turning over every couch cushion to make their new entitlement look affordable under Beltway accounting rules, Democrats decided to raise taxes on companies that do the public service of offering prescription drug benefits to their retirees instead of dumping them into Medicare. We and others warned this would lead to AT&T-like results, but like so many other ObamaCare objections Democrats waved them off as self-serving or "political."

The kicker?

Meanwhile, Henry Waxman and House Democrats announced yesterday that they will haul these companies in for an April 21 hearing because their judgment "appears to conflict with independent analyses, which show that the new law will expand coverage and bring down costs."

In other words, shoot the messenger. Black-letter financial accounting rules require that corporations immediately restate their earnings to reflect the present value of their long-term health liabilities, including a higher tax burden. Should these companies have played chicken with the Securities and Exchange Commission to avoid this politically inconvenient reality? Democrats don't like what their bill is doing in the real world, so they now want to intimidate CEOs into keeping quiet.

Democrats were warned but they were so set on jamming through their agenda without consideration of the damage it would do and companies are starting to file their reports now that Obamacare has passed.

Expect more news like this to start coming out.

When companies lose money, they either go broke, raise prices or lower the quality of their benefits because they are not in business to lose money.

Who will end up suffering? Consumers, taxpayers, employees and their families.

I wonder how long before we start hearing talk of more bailouts.

Illinois 11th Congressional District

Many have asked us what they can do now to help elect Republicans in November. As a practical matter, we have to wait until the Republican candidate is chosen in a primary election. Fortunately, Illinois has already held a primary election and Texas has held the first round with any required runoff races to be held on April 13th. We will only look at races where we feel the Republican candidate has a decent chance of beating the Democrat incumbent.

Illinois has four competitive races against Democrat incumbents so we will look at another of those today:

Illinois 11th House District

Rep Debbie Halvorson
Democrat Rep. Debbie Halvorson
Adam Kinzinger photo
Republican Adam Kinzinger

IL-11
Illinois 11th Congressional District

Representative Halvorson carried this district by a 23.92% margin in 2008 while McCain-Palin were losing by an 8.18% margin. The former Republican incumbent, Gerald C. "Jerry" Weller, retired in 2008. He had represented this district since 1994. Due to the high margin and the McCain-Palin loss, we cannot give it more than an outside chance since it would take a year like 1994 to overcome those factors. Rep. Halvorson has made it easier by voting for both health care bills. As you can see from the poll below, the Republican candidate is doing far better than the mathematical odds would predict.

The Republican primary has already been held in Illinois so the Republican candidate is:

Adam Kinzinger (R) - Ex-McLean County Commissioner & Iraq War Veteran

His website is Adam Kinzinger for U.S. Congress

Obama's Budget $1.2 Trillion More Than Projected

I asked yesterday how much damage Barack Obama could do to America by November, when hopefully voters will replace Democrats in enough House and Senate seats to stop Dems from jamming through any more of Obama's costly agenda.

Well, according to the CBO, it seems the damage is already massive and getting worse.

President Obama's fiscal 2011 budget will generate nearly $10 trillion in cumulative budget deficits over the next 10 years, $1.2 trillion more than the administration projected, and raise the federal debt to 90 percent of the nation's economic output by 2020, the Congressional Budget Office reported Thursday.

In its 2011 budget, which the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released Feb. 1, the administration projected a 10-year deficit total of $8.53 trillion. After looking it over, CBO said in its final analysis, released Thursday, that the president's budget would generate a combined $9.75 trillion in deficits over the next decade.

"An additional $1.2 trillion in debt dumped on [GDP] to our children makes a huge difference," said Brian Riedl, a budget analyst at the conservative Heritage Foundation. "That represents an additional debt of $10,000 per household above and beyond the federal debt they are already carrying."

Summary of the CBO report can be found at the Congressional Budget Office blog and the PDF format found here.

Gingrich speaks the truth about Obamacare and Dems responsibility for fallout

....I think it’d be nice for President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Reid to take some responsibility over what their actions have done to this country.--- Newt Gingrich

Text:

Just as there was no place for the kind of viciousness against Bush and Cheney, there’s no place for viciousness against Democrats. I would condemn any kind of activity that involves that kind of personal threat. But look, I think there’s something very disingenuous about the Democratic leaders who attacked the tea party movement, who refused to hold town hall meetings, who refused to go back home, who kept the Congress locked up in Washington, and are now shocked that people are angry. I think the Democratic leadership has to take some moral responsibility for having behaved with such arrogance, in such a hostile way, that the American people are deeply upset. So let’s be honest with this. This is a game that they’re playing. People should not engage in personal threats. I’m happy to condemn any effort to engage in personal threats. But I think the Democratic leadership has to take some real responsibility for having run a machine that used corrupt tactics, that bought votes, that bullied people, and as a result has enraged much of the American people. And I think it’d be nice for President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Majority Leader Reid to take some responsibility over what their actions have done to this country.

Lest it be said that we are condoning violence and threats against members of the Senate and Congress...let me be clear.

There is no room in the battle nor debate for violence against politicians.

With that said, Democrats jammed through a bill going against the majority of Americans, knowing full well the opposition held the majority and did so simply because they could in order to further their own agenda.

I am not saying they deserve to be terrorized, not at all, but they damned well pushed so hard that they had to know some would push back, even in a manner that is abhorrent to those of us that believe the push back should be done legally.

So while we do not condone those violent actions, nor the threats against politicians, I do think Democrats violated their oath to represent the people and unfortunately some people react horribly to being violated.

Gingrich is right... Dems are being very disingenuous.

More Obamacare Ramifications

The AP discovers..... drum roll.....:

The health care overhaul will cost U.S. companies billions and make them more likely to drop prescription drug coverage for retirees because of a change in how the government subsidizes those benefits.

In the first two days after the law was signed, three major companies — Deere & Co., Caterpillar Inc. and Valero Energy — said they expect to take a total hit of $265 million to account for smaller tax deductions in the future.

With more than 3,500 companies now getting the tax break as an incentive to keep providing coverage, others are almost certain to announce similar cost increases in the weeks ahead as they sort out the impact of the change.

Figuring out what it will mean for retirees will take longer, but analysts said as many as 2 million could lose the prescription drug coverage provided by their former employers, leaving them to enroll in Medicare's program.

Read all about it, too bad the AP didn't bother to report the news, BEFORE the bill became law.

Government-imposed restrictions on participation in political campaigns struck down

Via Institute For Justice:

Today, the federal courts ruled once again to expand free speech rights by striking down government-imposed restrictions on participation in political campaigns. Citizens’ groups have now been freed to speak out in elections thanks to a unanimous “en banc” ruling today by all nine active judges on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. This is the first major application of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC, which expanded the free speech rights of corporations and unions to participate in elections.

Holding that, under Citizens United, “the government has no anti-corruption interest in limiting contributions to an independent expenditure group,” Chief Judge David Sentelle, in an opinion joined by all eight other judges on the D.C. Circuit, struck down federal campaign finance laws that made it practically impossible for new and independent groups of individuals to join together and advocate for the election or defeat of political candidates.

“This is a tremendous victory for free speech,” said Institute for Justice Senior Attorney Steve Simpson, who argued the case before the D.C. Circuit. “This decision ensures that all Americans can band together to make their voices heard during elections.”

Representative Bean carried this district by a 21.44% margin in 2008 while McCain-Palin were losing by an 12.82% margin. The former Republican incumbent, Philip M. Crane, was beaten by her in 2004. He had represented this district since 1992. Rep. Bean has made the mistake of voting for Obama care twice even after being targeted by the National GOP for her vote the first time. This has moved her into range in the quite possible group for the Republicans to take this seat.

The Republican primary has already been held in Illinois so the Republican candidate is:

Joe Walsh (R) - Teacher, '96 Candidate & '98 State Rep. Candidate
