France- 70 Percent Say Roman Polanski Should 'Face Justice'

The French public is starting to weigh in on their politicians initial reactions over child rapist, Roman Polanski's arrest, 30 years after he fled from justice before sentencing, after pleading to a lesser charge to avoid rape and sodomy charges for drugging and anally raping a 13 year old girl while he was in his 40's.

Marc Laffineur, the vice-president of the French assembly and a member of President Nicolas Sarkozy’s ruling center-right party, the UMP, took issue with the French culture and foreign minister’s remarks supporting Mr. Polanski, saying “the charge of raping a child 13 years old is not something trivial, whoever the suspect is.”

Within the Green party, Daniel Cohn-Bendit — a French deputy in the European parliament whose popularity is rising — also criticized Sarkozy administration officials for leaping too quickly to Mr. Polanski’s side despite the serious nature of his crime. On the extreme right, the father and daughter politicians Jean-Marie and Marine Le Pen also attacked the ministers, saying they were supporting “a criminal pedophile in the name of the rights of the political-artistic class.”

Seems the French public, by an overwhelming majority, do not agree with the politicians that came out in support of Polanski.

Marie-Louise Fort, a French lawmaker in the Assembly who has sponsored anti-incest legislation, said in an interview that she was shocked that Mr. Polanski was attracting support from the political and artistic elite. “I don’t believe that public opinion is spontaneously supporting Mr. Polanski at all,” she said. “I believe that there is a distinction between the mediagenic class of artists and ordinary citizens that have a vision that is more simple.”

The mood was even more hostile in blogs and e-mails to newspapers and news magazines. Of the 30,000 participants in an online poll by the French daily Le Figaro, more than 70 percent said Mr. Polanski, 76, should face justice. And in the magazine Le Point, more than 400 letter writers were almost universal in their disdain for Mr. Polanski.

That contempt was not only directed at Mr. Polanski, but at the French class of celebrities — nicknamed Les People — who are part of Mr. Polanski’s rarefied Parisian world. Letter writers to Le Point scorned Les People as the “crypto-intelligentsia of our country” who deliver “eloquent phrases that defy common sense.”

Next should be a major backlash against our Hollywood elite for their outrage over Polanski's arrest, while ignoring his crime.

A NYT editorial also denounces those that ignore the crime itself in favor of Polanski:

But hold on a moment. After being indicted in 1977, didn’t Mr. Polanski, now 76, confess to having sex with a 13-year-old girl after plying her with Quaaludes and Champagne? Didn’t he flee the United States when the plea bargaining seemed to fall apart, raising the prospect of prison time? Isn’t there a warrant for his arrest?

SNIP

In Europe, the prevailing mood — at least among those with access to the news media — seemed to be that Mr. Polanski has already “atoned for the sins of his young years,” as Jacek Bromski, the chief of the Polish Filmmakers Association, put it.

We disagree strongly, and we were glad to see other prominent Europeans beginning to point out that this case has nothing to do with Mr. Polanski’s work or his age. It is about an adult preying on a child. Mr. Polanski pleaded guilty to that crime and must account for it.

I guess for the French and certain others, it was much easier to defend him before the transcripts of his plea as well as the victims grand jury testimony was made public showing him as what he is...

A child rapist and fugitive from the law.

Polanski Knew Child Was 13- Let Him Rot

The Smoking Gun provides transcripts of Roman Polanski's guilty plea over 30 years ago, before he fled the country to avoid being sentenced, where Polanski admitted to knowing the child he anally raped after drugging her, was 13 years old while Polanski was in his 40's.

As Roman Polanski sits in a Zurich prison readying to fight extradition to the United States, it seems like a good time to publish the official court transcript of the film director's guilty plea to having sex with an underage California girl. On August 8, 1977 Polanski appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court and copped to a felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse. As seen in the below transcript, he acknowledged being aware that the victim was 13 at the time of their March 1977 encounter in a Mulholland Drive home owned by actor Jack Nicholson. Polanski, now 77, fled the country before being sentenced, fearful that he would be imprisoned by Judge Laurence Rittenband, the jurist before whom he entered his guilty plea. At the time of Polanski's plea, a lawyer for the family of the victim wrote Rittenband and urged him to accept the deal, thereby sparing the child from testifying before a media horde and having her identity publicly disclosed. "Whatever harm has come to her as a victim would be exacerbated in the extreme if this case went to trial," wrote attorney Lawrence Silver. "This is not the place for a recovering young girl." Click here to read the girl's harrowing grand jury testimony about the sex crime. A copy of Polanski's probation report, prepared in advance of his yet-to-occur sentencing, can be found here. (19 pages)

The details are there for anyone to read and some people are disgusted at how long it has taken to capture this child raping fugitive, while he went on to create movies, win awards and is generally idolized by Hollywood elites.

What gets me is how Hollywood and portions of the left, are so "outraged" over Polanski's arrest, yet they do not seem to give a damn that this grown man anally raped a 13 yr old child, which is why he was arrested to begin with.

Read the transcripts, Polanski's plea and the childs grand jury testimony, then watch the clip below where Whoopi Goldberg actually declares it was really "rape rape".

Huh?

Drugging a child, ignoring the child saying "no" and raping her anally, isn't really "rape rape?"

In what universe does Whoopi Goldberg live in?

Huffpo wrote many pieces in defense of Polanski and evidently some of their commenters didn't appreciate the site siding with the child rapist.

Obviously the same universe many other Hollywood elites live in as Hollywood unites, not behind punishing a child rapist, but behind the child rapist himself!!!

Look at some of these headlines:

Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese: Free Roman Polanski!

Release Polanski, demands petition by film industry luminaries

Jazz Shaw at Moderate voice did some checking on others that are defending and outraged over Polanski's arrest:

I did some quick checking at “Look to the Stars” which promotes charitable work by celebrities, and Debra Winger is listed as one of their most prominent advocates for women’s issues charities. And what is the fourth most prominently championed organization there? The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. And who else is listed as a key supporter on the same page? Why, it’s none other than Whoopi Goldberg, whose profile includes the following:

The comedienne has channeled her celebrity into bringing attention to countless causes including AIDS, children’s issues, healthcare and substance abuse.

So, Ms. Winger and Ms. Goldberg are both prominent activists in the protection of females and children. Unless, of course, the female child in question crosses paths with the great Roman Polanski, in which case, well… you know… we understand they’re all kind of whores at that age, right?

I am leaving Shaw with the last word because I am still sitting here, shaking my head at the sheer lunacy of Hollywood uniting behind an admitted rapist.

Is It 'Party Treason' To Listen To Constituents?

Ridiculous item of the day comes from FireDogLake, where blogger Jane Hamsher accuses any Democrat that would support a Republican filibuster on a vote over the public option, of being guilty of "party treason."

The background:

Two Senators offered up two different measures to have the public option added into the Senate Finance Committee's healthcare reform bill aka Obamacare and both measures were rejected, one by a vote of 15 to 8 and the other by a vote of 13 to 10.

Chuck Schumer and Max Baucus both underscored the lack of being able to obtain 60 votes for the public option in the Senate, 60 being needed to overcome a Republican filibuster.

So, Hamsher states:

The Public Option doesn't need 60 votes. It needs 51. That is, unless the GOP filibusters it. What Baucus and Schumer are saying -- explicitly -- is that there are Democrats who would support a GOP filibuster to keep the public option from having an up-or-down vote on the floor of the Senate. They are saying that there are Democrats who would vote with the GOP to block a vote on something that the President says he supports -- a public option.

That is a very serious charge. It's tantamount to party treason. Schumer and Baucus need to say who these members are immediately.

After the spectacle of townhalls across America in August, where constituents trudged down to their townhall meetings and made their voices heard, moderate Democrats have a hard choice in front of them.

Listen to the constituents that put them in office and have the power to vote them out in 2010 or toe the party line and do what the Democratic leaders want and the hell with the voters as well as their own political careers.

What people like Hamsher seem to forget is the politicians work for us, our state Senators as well as congress men and women are there to do what their constituents want, not what party leaders or Barack Obama wants.

Via Wapo:

The votes are likely to deepen fissures in the Democratic Party over the shape of the legislation, and they proved what critics have long argued: Moderate Democrats are reluctant to expand the federal health-care role beyond the current boundaries of the Medicare, Medicaid and Department of Veterans Affairs programs. Even President Obama, who has repeatedly supported a government-run plan in public statements, has indicated that the idea is not worth the price of failing to enact his biggest domestic policy goal.

So, are politicians supposed to toe the "party line" or do what their constituents want?

Calling a vote to better represent the people that put you in office, party treason, is the ridiculous item of the day.

Police State in Hardin, Montana

Story appears to be true. See all the news links below.

Here are excerpts from an e-mail I received today. I have not verified all of the allegations made in this e-mail:

" . . .We have found out that our little town of Hardin is the 'test town' for President Obama’s new law to privatize the police force of local communities. Last night, the city council voted to disband our sheriff’s department and to bring in a private security company to police the town. . .

. . .Yesterday, a convoy of twelve 'blacked out' Mercedes Benz SUV’s were brought into town. They were already painted with Hardin’s colors and ‘Hardin Police Force’ was already painted on them! Hardin’s sheriff’s department will no longer be in operation after the month of October. During October, the Sheriff’s Department is to train this new security force in all the logistics of running the town of Hardin. . .

. . .Earlier this month, in an interview in regards to this Hardin prison and the training center that they are planning to build, we were told that seventy five percent of the security officers that were to be trained would be ‘international’. . .

This private security force is already patrolling the town. They had several people stopped yesterday. Also, it appears that they are building some type of heavy duty gate at the entrances of our town.

In an interview, the American Police Force security has stated that they will stay here one month to assess the population and then they will make their permanent base here. They said they are scouting out thirty towns in the U.S. but that Hardin is the first. Also, President Obama has authorized and signed a bill for full government funding of the privatization of the police departments throughout the U.S. By the end of October, it is their plan to have all major cities locked down!

In an interview with one of the city council members, he stated that this new H1N1 shot which has not been tested will be mandatory and if a resident of our town refuses, they will be taken to our prison where they will be quarantined. A federal law has been passed that makes it mandatory that all health care workers have to take this new shot. If they do not, they will automatically loose their jobs. . .

I  (name withheld by this editor) am also told by a reliable source that today one of the managers at a local business in Hardin was visited by this new private security force which is now the new Hardin Police Department. He is an avid hunter and they came to inform him that they had a list of all fire arms that he owned; this includes all the residents of our town, and that he would need to take his guns down to have them put a marking device on them.

Also, today, one of the main streets in Hardin was completely blocked off and they have been setting up information booths where they are passing out pamphlets with information on this new H1N1 shot.

. . .I am not making up any of this information!  You can go on the internet and verify most of this information from KULR 8, MSNBC or Fox news. Things have changed so quickly in the last 24 hours! Things are not and will never be the same. . ."

Google cleanses their news links pretty fast these days for some reason, so save these news links.

Breaking: Democrats Fail To Pass Public Option Through Committee

By a vote of 15 to 8, the Senate Finance Committee rejected a measure by a measure by Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.)to add the public option into the committee's health reform bill aka Obamacare bill.

Baucus, the committee chairman, said he believed that adding a public option to the current insurance landscape could lower costs, but said including it in his bill would jeopardize the chances of passing heath care reform through Congress. "I can count," he said. "And no one has shown me how to get to 60 votes with the public option in the bill."

All 10 Republicans on the committee, including Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine, voted against the Rockefeller amendment, as did moderate Democrats Tom Carper of Delaware, Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, Bill Nelson of Florida and Baucus. "My first job is to get this bill across the finish line," Baucus concluded.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also proposed a easure to add the public option into the bill, but his did not tie the rates to medicare, and Schumer's proposal was also rejected.

Fox:

A key Senate committee voted against two separate proposals that would have created a new government health insurance plan after senators sparred for hours Tuesday over the necessity of a so-called public option to compete with the private market.

The 15-to-8 vote by the Senate Finance Committee could forecast the fate of the public option in the Senate as a whole. The outcome was expected but still a defeat for liberals who view government-sponsored insurance for the middle class as a key component of President Obama's health care overhaul.

Five committee Democrats, including Chairman Max Baucus, joined with all 10 committee Republicans to defeat the measure by Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia.

Earthquake and Tsunami Warnings

What was reported as a 7.9 earthquake has now been upgraded to an 8 and word has just come out on news channels that the earthquake has generated a Tsunami. Officials are trying to determine which direction the Tsunami is heading.

A tsunami warning was posted for a swath of the South Pacific today after a magnitude-7.9 earthquake struck near Pago Pago, American Samoa, U.S. agencies reported.

The quake struck shortly before 7 a.m. local time about 122 miles (196 kilometers) from Pago Pago, said the U.S. Geological Survey. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said warnings for tsunami activity were posted for Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Samoa, American Samoa and a half-dozen other island nations.

Phone calls to the office of the governor of American Samoa weren’t immediately answered.

Again, that 7.9 has been now upgraded to an 8.3.

Reports are saying "some damage, but nothing serious", according to Fox, from initial reports.

Keep your eye on the National Weather Center, Hawaii is under watches.

Senate Abortion Vote Tuesday—Your Call Can Help

From Citizen Link.com:

Members of the U.S. Senate Financial Services Committee will be voting Tuesday on amendments which would keep abortion coverage out of the health-care bill.

Sen. Max Baucus’s, D-Mont., proposed health-care bill includes specific language that would allow abortion to be subsidized with taxpayer funds.

Recently, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, has introduced several amendments that would prevent any government funding of abortions and protect current conscience laws for health care workers.

FRC Action has released a call to action asking constituents to contact Finance Committee members today and urge them to support the Hatch amendments.

If you would like to take part in this vital effort to keep your tax dollars from funding abortion in health care, please call these Senators:

Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.): 202-224-5521
Sen. Thomas Carper (D-Del.): 202-224-2441
Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.): 202-224-2043
Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.): 202-224-4843
Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.): 202-224-5274
Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine): 202-224-5344

For those who would attempt to insist this isn't truly an issue and Obamacare would never cover abortions, the NYT reports today:

Abortion opponents in both the House and the Senate are seeking to block the millions of middle- and lower-income people who might receive federal insurance subsidies to help them buy health coverage from using the money on plans that cover abortion. And the abortion opponents are getting enough support from moderate Democrats that both sides say the outcome is too close to call. Opponents of abortion cite as precedent a 30-year-old ban on the use of taxpayer money to pay for elective abortions.

Abortion-rights supporters say such a restriction would all but eliminate from the marketplace private plans that cover the procedure, pushing women who have such coverage to give it up. Nearly half of those with employer-sponsored health plans now have policies that cover abortion, according to a study by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The question looms as a test of President Obama’s campaign pledge to support abortion rights but seek middle ground with those who do not. Mr. Obama has promised for months that the health care overhaul would not provide federal money to pay for elective abortions, but White House officials have declined to spell out what he means.

Make your calls.

This is not about whether abortion is right or wrong or if life starts at conception, that is a battle that will rage between proponents and opponents for years to come.

This is about whether tax payer dollars should be used to fund abortions.. That is it.
