Gallup: 72% Of Debate Watchers Give First Debate To Romney

By Susan Duclos

Gallup shows the 2012 presidential race neck-to-neck with both Romney and Obama tied at 47 percent from surveys conducted after the first presidential debate, but a survey down below the top line news, shows that 72 percent of debate watchers said Mitt Romney did a better job, with just 20 percent saying the same of Obama. That includes 70 percent of Independents and even a plurality of Democrats with 49 percent agreeing.

Rasmussen has the two candidates tied as well, both receiving 48 percent support.

Other polling news shows that according to a Politico Battleground Poll, Mitt Romney is trouncing Obama among Independents by a 16 points, 51-35. Also a 13 point enthusiasm gap in Romney's favor. Only 73 percent of Obama's supporters are "extremely likely" to vote, compared to 86 percent of Romney's supporters. (This poll was takenmostly before the whipping Romney gave Obama in the first debate.)

As discussed previously, among the military Romney is ahead of Obama by more than two-to-one, 66 percent to 26 percent.

[Update] Pew Research shows the largest gain for Romney:

In turn, Romney has drawn even with Obama in the presidential race among registered voters (46% to 46%) after trailing by nine points (42% to 51%) in September. Among likely voters, Romney holds a slight 49% to 45% edge over Obama. He trailed by eight points among likely voters last month.
