Berkeley City Council Wants to Rescind Resolution--TOO LATE

[Update- Live updates and photos from the showdown in Berkeley with MOVE AMERICA FORWARD leading the way, all day updating, February 12, 2008]

Video below of the Code Pinkos physically stopping people from entering the Marine Recruiting center in Berkeley, with the police standing idly by and doing nothing.

Are they kidding?

The Berkeley city council passes a resolution stating that the Marines in Berkeley at the recruiting station were "uninvited and unwelcome intruders", the recording of them, which Michelle Malkin kindly makes available shows them saying:

You can hear Berzerkeley City Council members and Mayor Tom Bates inveighing that “Marines are the President’s own gangsters… they are trained killers.” Another council member by phone then says that the Marines are known for “death and destruction…and maiming” and they give America “horrible karma.

Listen to it yourself.... that one action on their part has caused businesses to decide to no longer DO business with Berkeley, Senator DeMint to propose legislation to strip over 2 million dollars of funds from Berkeley, The America Legion to issue a statement, Vets For Freedom to step in and issue their own statement, Move America Forward to start a petition to be delivered to the city council at their next meeting on February 12, 2008 as well as staging a rally on behalf of the Marines showing support and members of Berkeley citizenry to cry out against its own council....and NOW they want to rescind the resolution and pretend that what they SAID on the recording didn't accurately portray their "intentions"??????

Are you FREAKING kidding me???????

Let us take a look at the wording of the resolution the city council of Berkeley passed:

From: Peace and Justice Commission

Recommendation:

1. Direct the City Attorney to investigate and report back to Council within 60 days on City options for enforcing Chapter 13.28 of the Berkeley Municipal Code, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, with respect to military recruiting offices in Berkeley;

2. Direct the City Manager to send letters to the Marine Corps Recruiting Station at 64 Shattuck Avenue and to General James T. Conway, Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, advising them that the Marine recruiting office is not welcome in our city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders;

3. Encourage all people to avoid cooperation with the Marine Corps recruiting station, and applaud residents and organizations such as Code Pink, that may volunteer to impede, passively or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of any military recruiting office located in the City of Berkeley.

There is no mistaking the intention of what the city council was saying, they simply miscalculated the extent of the backlash they were going to receive from their idiocy and now are tying to backpedal because even their own town members are making their dissatisfaction known, according to the SFGate:

Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli on Monday proposed that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.

The City Council will vote on Olds' and Capitelli's two proposals at its meeting next Tuesday.

"I think we shouldn't be seen across the country as hating the Marines," said Olds, who voted against last week's proposals. "If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."

The brouhaha started last week when the council passed two items condemning the Marine recruiting center on Shattuck Square, which opened about a year ago. The first called on the city clerk to send a letter to the Marines telling them they're unwelcome, and the second item granted Code Pink a parking space in front of the recruiting office every Wednesday afternoon and allowed the group to operate a loudspeaker.

After the items passed, the council was besieged with criticism from right-wing groups and military supporters. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., proposed that the federal government cut off funds for Berkeley, including lunch programs, ferry service and UC Berkeley.

Olds said she heard from hundreds of people angered by the city's action, including many in her Berkeley hills district.

"People are so mad about this. They have relatives in the service, and now they think they're not welcome in Berkeley," she said. "My twin brother was a Marine in World War II. He'd be turning in his grave if he saw this."

Other members of the council want to "stick by their convictions".

Make no mistake, they meant to word the resolution the way they did and when city council member, Linda Maio claims that ""I don't think any of us paid enough attention to it, and people want to rewrite it to more accurately portray our sentiments. We really do have a great deal of concern for the people in our military, and we don't want to be critical of the sacrifices they are making," she is full of it!!!!!!

They knew exactly what they were passing, the resolution, as seen above wasn't very long and it was VERY clear.

Next I want you to take a good hard look at this video, where the Code Pink protesters at Berkeley, with the police standing there and doing nothing because they are "trying to remain neutral" are allowing the protesters to physically stop people from entering the Marine recruitment center.

It is a two minute video and shows perfectly the abuse the city of Berkeley allows and encourages against OUR Marines, our Military on a daily basis.

QandO
puts this perfectly at the end of his post:

As Winston Churchill once said:
"We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm."
The Marines wish you pleasant dreams, Berkeley.
