Due to the $53 million price tag of the Pope Francis' Brazil visit, paid with public funds, protesters clashed with police in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. Protesters lobbed Molotov cocktails and the police responded with tear gas and water cannons.
The protests took place near the Rio state governor's palace, where Pope Francis and Brazil's president Dilma Rousseff were meeting on Monday.
Protesters were quoted as chanting "Go away Cabral, go away Dilma," while a huge banner read: "Down with the fascist state and its anti-people governments".
