Real Clear Politics article by David Paul Kuhn explains how senior citizens are more motivated and set for a "historic turnout" for the November 2, 2010, midterm elections.Not only are seniors more motivated, engaged and enthusiastic but they are also overwhelmingly leaning towards Republicans this voting season.
Democrats are trailing in almost every demographic, but during midterms seniors are more likely to be one of the largest voting blocs that will be heading to the voting booths.
It's change grandma and grandpa believe in. Seniors are poised to vote at historic levels on Election Day. And it's bad news for Democrats. They support Republicans more than any other age group.
Republicans are more likely to vote at every age this year. But it's older Republican voters--including GOP-leaning independents--who could create a generational tide.
Young adults are not less likely to vote. Older adults are remarkably likely. Seniors and baby boomers are more engaged in the election and more enthusiastic about voting than pre-election polling has found since at least 1994, according to Pew Research Center data. By comparison, young voters and adults between the ages of 30 and 49 poll like previous midterm cycles.
The trend is strongest among voters age 65 and older. Eighty-four percent of seniors who are registered to vote say they will "definitely" vote. That's 9 percentage points above the previous record, 1994, when the question was first asked. Six in 10 seniors have given the election "a lot" of thought, also a peak. High enthusiasm and engagement generally signal high turnout.
Then in a separate piece at Wall Street Journal we see that Barack Obama, understanding this, has decided with two weeks until election day, to try to buy those senior votes.
Can our retired readers be bought for $250? Apparently President Obama thinks they can, because two weeks before Election Day he has endorsed sending bonus checks for that amount to the nearly 58 million Americans on Social Security.
It's hard to imagine a more blatant vote-buying exercise, especially with polls showing that seniors have turned sharply against the Democrats this year. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader (pro-tem) Harry Reid have both promised check-writing votes in the lame duck session.....
If that doesn't work, I am sure Obama will simply explain to American voters how they voted Dems out of control because voters were just "scared" and not "thinking clearly."
