A liberal bastion and example of purely liberal policies, spending, taxing, spending some more and now news that the third city in two weeks, in California, is declaring bankruptcy.
San Bernardino, CA. joins Stockton, and Mammoth Lakes and seeks Bankruptcy protection.
Handing it over to Ed Morrissey from Hot Air who says:
Decades of financial mismanagement has led the Golden State to the brink of financial collapse — and not just the cities. The state has run annual budget deficits for years that run in the $15-25 billion range; their latest is an $18 billion gap. At the same time, the California Senate just approved the construction of a completely unnecessary high-speed rail line between two points in California where no one wants to go, as a first step to building a full line between San Francisco and Los Angeles that will carry passengers at a rate roughly two and a half times slower than air travel. The cost? $100 billion, at the moment. Furthermore, it will run on electricity, which California already doesn’t produce in enough quantity to meet its current needs.
Spot on.
Let us not forget another reason the state of California is bleeding money: It is the state with the most amount of Sanctuary Cities in the country.
Despite a 1996 federal law [the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act ( IIRIRA )] that requires local governments to cooperate with Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), many large urban cities (and some small) have adopted so-called "sanctuary" policies. Generally, sanctuary policies instruct city employees not to notify the federal government of the presence of illegal aliens living in their communities. The policies also end the distinction between legal resident aliens and illegal aliens--so illegal aliens often benefit from taxpayer funded government services and programs too.
(Scroll down at the link above, for a list. San Bernardino is on that list, but disputed by the city's admin, yet has not provided any documents proving they are not a sanctuary city)
