Hobbton High School bans American Flag Clothing

The American Flag not being allowed to be worn on clothing, right here in America.

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C. – On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, students at one high school were not allowed to wear clothes with an American flag.

Under a new school rule, students at Hobbton High School are not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States.

The new rule stems from a controversy over students wearing shirts bearing flags of other countries.

Gayle Langston said her daughter, Jessica, was told to remove her Stars and Stripes t-shirt.

“Today she wanted to wear her shirt, and I had to tell her no,” said Langston. “She didn't like it at all because I knew it would get her in trouble. Of all days, 9/11, she could not wear her American Flag shirt.”

Where is the ACLU's outrage about these childrens rights? I don't see them saying anything.

If you want your voice heard, here is the appropriate information:

Not to mention a little thing like the First Amendment. Apparently, in some North Carolina schools, you have the right to burn a flag in front of a school, but not to display it respectfully inside a school.

Stop the ACLU:

Yikes! Call the freakin ACLU or something. I heard they specialize in stuff like this. If they fought for a kid to wear a dress and Bong Hits For Jesus, surely they can handle the American Flag! I even heard a rumor that American and Liberty was part of their name! Besides, it would be nice to see them fight for something pro-American for a change. Let me know what kind of run around you get when you call. If they take the case, I’ll eat my hat.

[Update]-Bestill my heart. I criticize the ACLU quite often, so when they do something good and right, I feel it is only fair to point it out as quickly as I point out their faults.

This just in my email:

ACLU-NC Criticizes Sampson County School for Banning Students from Wearing Clothingthat Depicts Any Flag

SAMPSON COUNTY – The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Legal Foundation (ACLU-NC) sent a letter to the principal of Hobbton High School and the superintendent of the Sampson County school district today, urging the school to reverse its policy of banning students from wearing clothing that depicts the American flag or any other flag. According to news reports yesterday, a student was prohibited from wearing her Stars and Stripes commemorative t-shirt on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

“The school has no right to prevent this student – or any other student – from wearing a flag on her clothing,” said Jennifer Rudinger, Executive Director of the ACLU-NCLF. “Hobbton High School is violating students’ First Amendment rights to free expression.”

The ACLU-NCLF’s letter calls on the Sampson County school district to end its practice of censoring students’ wearing of flags and comply with the constitutional protection of student speech laid out in the landmark 1969 U.S. Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, which affirmed the right of students to wear black armbands in protest of the Vietnam War.

The group’s letter asks the school district to reply by September 17th, Constitution Day, with assurances that the ban will be reversed and students in Sampson County schools will be told that they will not be disciplined for wearing clothing that depicts any flag of any country.

Good for them.

[Update #2] After coming under national attention, Hobbton High School, lifts the ban. (Hat Tip to Stop the ACLU)

SAMPSON COUNTY, N.C – A North Carolina High School that came under national attention over their rule that prohibited students from wearing items with the American flag, or any flag from other countries, has lifted the ban.

Superintendent Dr. L. Stewart Hobbs, Jr said they have lifted the ban on flags and “from this point on, all dress code changes will be made at the school board level.”

Under the previous rule, students at Hobbton High School were not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States.

The decision came a day after a student was told not to wear a shirt bearing the American symbol on September 11th.
