Hopes Dwindle on finding Steve Fossett

Experts remain determined to find Steve Fossett, on the 12th day of searching for him but hope is dwindling that he will be found alive.

There has been a massive search effort for Steve Fossett, millionaire adventurer since he disappeared Monday, September 3, 2007, after heading out to find dry lake beds suitable for his next adventure of breaking the land speed record.

Steve Fossett has 116 records in five different sports, 76 of which still stand.

Fossett, who made his fortune in the financial services industry, is best known for his five world record nonstop circumnavigations of the Earth: as a long-distance solo balloonist, as a sailor, and as a solo airplane pilot

www.stevefossett.com is keeping running updates up on the search.

From Mercury News:

New technology is leading the way, but commanders and rescue experts say old-fashioned doggedness and a slow, methodical scouring of the harsh Nevada landscape by trained observers provides the best hope for finding millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett, dead or alive.

As the search stretched into its 12th day on Friday, Civil Air Patrol Maj. Cynthia Ryan said the operation may be tedious, but in the end, they usually find what they're looking for.

Maj. Bill Schroeder has only been a member of Nevada's Civil Air Patrol for 12 years but was involved in search and rescue many years before that and doesn't ever recall failing to find the target.

"Because we keep the search up until we find it," he said.

Granted, sometimes they don't. Hunters, hikers or backcountry day-trippers sometimes stumble upon the wreckage months or even years later.

But Ryan remains confident Fossett's plane eventually will be found, and most likely, the old-fashioned way.

"Experience has shown us, if we just keep going back, looking at areas at different times of the day, in different lighting conditions" the plane eventually turns up, Ryan said.

"We have about an 87 percent success rate," she said. "We may look like a bunch of yokels, but we're about the best trained volunteers anywhere."
