School Gunman Taken Into Custody After Firing Shots and Taking Hostages

Mad at a teacher, a 17 year old student at Las Plumas High School in Oroville, California, fired into the air, held hostages for over an hour and was taken into custody peacefully by authorities.

A swat team was called in and six schools in the district were locked down.

Butte County Sheriff's deputies spent the morning negotiating with the armed student to put down the handgun and he surrendered "without incident" after releasing the hostages around 10:45 a.m., authorities said. No injuries were reported.

Sheriff's spokesman Sang Kim said a 911 call came in from Las Plumas High School just after 9 a.m. and the Oroville Union High School District immediately put all six schools in the district on lockdown.

A SWAT team entered the campus to evacuate the roughly 1,400 students after the incident was first reported. The students were taken to the Church of the Nazarene where parents could pick them up.
