Eyes Back On The Ball: Obama's Abortion Mandate, Cardinal Dolan And Confusion

By Susan Duclos

At the end of my third piece on the entertaining spectacle provided by Sandra Fluke, Rush Limbaugh, Nancy Pelosi and the hypocritical left, I said time to get our eye back on the ball and that is exactly what I am doing with this piece.

Updated news on Obama's abortion mandate and to explain the term "abortion mandate", I remind you of earlier explanations:

"Time to start calling this mandate the "Obama abortion mandate" or the "Obama abortifacient mandate" or the "Obama sterilization mandate," take your pick, because those names are no more misleading than the Obama administration calling it a contraception mandate."- WuA

(Note- Mandate forces religious institutes to provide access to insurance that covers contraceptives and sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs)

Today we see some interesting updates on Obama's war on religious freedom, first via Gateway Pundit who shows us video of Cardinal Timothy Dolan blasting Barack Obama’s contraception plan yesterday as a “freedom of religion battle."

Next up is is article in ST. Louis Review which reiterates Cardinal Dolan's stance as well as quoting San Francisco Archbishop George H. Niederauer who says "not about contraception, but about religious liberty." They go on to quote others such as Bishop William E. Lori of Bridgeport, Conn., chairman of the U.S. bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty who takes issue with an editorial in the March 5 edition of America magazine:

Bishop William E. Lori of Bridgeport, Conn., chairman of the U.S. bishops' Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty, also took issue with the editorial in a March 2 letter to the editor. In reference to the editorial's call for civility and a "conciliatory style," he said: "Maybe Moses wasn't at his best when he confronted Pharaoh. Maybe the Good Shepherd was a bit off his game when he confronted the rulers of his day."

In his column, Archbishop Niederauer acknowledged "the issue of contraception is extremely important in American society," but also pointed out that there are "frameworks though which the government's desire to make contraceptives widely available and affordable, and the Catholic Church's desire not to be involved in supplying contraceptives that conflict with Catholic faith, can both be accomplished."

LifeNews brings an update on upcoming protests:

On March 23, concerned citizens in over 50 cities — including Washington D.C., New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and San Francisco — will gather at federal buildings for a rally with the theme, “Stand Up for Religious Freedom — Stop the HHS Mandate!”

Thousands of Americans of all faiths are expected to participate in these rallies, organized by Citizens for a Pro-Life Society and the Pro-Life Action League, to oppose the new mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that requires all employers to provide free contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans. Religious leaders and other public figures will speak out against the HHS Mandate.

The opponents of the mandate say HHS provided a “religious exemption” so narrow that it would exclude Catholic hospitals, universities, and charities, forcing these institutions to act in direct opposition to Catholic teaching through the health care plans they provide.

“With the HHS Mandate, the Obama administration has presumed upon itself the authority to decide what counts as a religious institution in this country,” said Eric Scheidler, executive director of the Pro-Life Action League. “This is an unprecedented attack on the free exercise of religious faith protected by the First Amendment.”

“The Obama mandate is a complete affront to religious liberty,” said Monica Miller, director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society. “Persons of faith or no faith at all should be alarmed at Obama riding rough-shod over the conscience of American citizens. We are calling on all people of good will to rise up and vigorously oppose this ruling.”

This and more can be found with a simple Google search, showing that while Sandra Fluke's assertion that taxpayers should pay for her and other college students contraceptives and Rush Limbaugh calling Fluke a slut then apologizing, might have made news, but it never completely distracted the main issue of the First Amendment, and Obama's attempt to violate it.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
