With same sex marriage on the ballot in 8 states, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin and South Dakota, the ruling from new Jersey seems to be creating quite a stir.
The New York Times headlines with "G.O.P. Moves Fast to Reignite Issue of Gay Marriage" and the Washington Post headlines with "Religious Conservatives Cheer Ruling on Gays as a Wake Up Call".
NYT claims that the Democrats believe this will not dramatically alter the national conversation....wanna bet? After all, the NYT and Wapo are already spinning and reporting on it, the Blogosphere is all over it, blogs such as, Iowa Voice, Volokh Conspiracy, and Strata-Sphere just to name a few. There are too many to name so just look here and see exactly how many people are talking about this.
Wapo's article is quite amusing, calling this "bad news" that the conservatives were hoping for.
"Pro-traditional-marriage organizations ought to give a distinguished service award to the New Jersey Supreme Court," said the Rev. Richard Land, head of the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention.
I find this so amusing because I am simply waiting for the liberal conspiracy theorists to say that the New Jersey courts are working in cohorts with the Republican party by coming down with this decision at election time.
Anyone want to take bets on how long that will take?
Another little excerpt from Wapo.
"I have to think there are Democratic strategists out there thinking the words of the old Japanese admiral: 'I fear all we've done is wake a sleeping giant,' " said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, a Washington-based advocacy group. "They were coasting into an election with a Republican base with dampened enthusiasm. This brings it all back home to the base, what this election is about."
I will say it again, these next days should be very interesting.
