Brian Fallon, one of the top Democratic communicators on Capitol Hill and long-time spokesman for Senator Charles Schumer of New York, has been tapped by Attorney General Eric Holder to run the Justice Department’s Office of Public Affairs, according to a person familiar with the decision. Fallon will inherit a communications office that has been under intense pressure in recent weeks following the disclosure of the Justice Department’s decision to subpoena phone records from the Associated Press in a national security leak investigation. While Holder was recused from that investigation, he was involved in a separate probe involving a Fox News reporter and played a role in the decision to seek a search warrant for the private e-mails of the reporter, James Rosen. The leak investigations have drawn fire from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle as well as free speech advocates and media organizations who question the scope and intent of the Justice searches involving reporters.
