YouTube URL for the video showing the caption, here.
Fox News was doing a segment about a conservative group making a documentary which would include Michelle Obama's now infamous remark about being proud of America for the first time in her adult life.
They then introduce Michelle Malkin after asking if using Michelle Obama's words against the Obama's would backfire against the GOP and they go on to discuss whether Michelle Obama's words, while she is stumping for her husband are fair game to use against Obama in the general election.
What sparked the outrage is the caption on the bottom of the screen before Michelle Malkin was introduced, which read, "Outraged Liberals: Stop Picking On Obama's Baby Mama!"
One website headlines a piece "Hey Fox News, Just Call Her A N***** And Be Done With It, Okay?" Another headline, from Salon reads, "Oh no they didn't...."
Some people even have the impression that Malkin wrote the headline herself and have been sending her emails. For example, one email says, "You disgusting racist slant eyed pig! How do you like the name calling? Referring to Senator Obama’s wife in your typical way is what the country expects from an ignorant racist pig like yourself. No one wants to listen to your racist rants anymore. May the nightmare that is you be gone soon."
That is representative of the emails Malkin made public on her website.
Listening to the discussion, more than once, Malkin did not call Michelle Obama any names, she explained how going after the words said during stump speeches publicly were considered fair game and how she believes they should be fair game.
On her site, she also points out that that Michelle Obama publicly introduced Obama as "My baby's daddy Barack Obama. Yeah!"
I have to admit the first time I heard the expression "baby mama" was a recently released movie title for a 2008 movie starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler from Saturday Night Live, so I do not understand why Fox used it or the origins of the term itself although following a link or two and the origin question is answered easily.
The topic of whether Michelle Obama's public statements are fair game or not, has been discussed and probably will continue to be discussed at length despite Dick Durbin's (D-Illinois) assertion that anyone that does go after Michelle Obama will burn in hell.
Michael van der Galien over at PoliGazette is clear.ly amused over the "manufactured" outrage of the day.
Ok, so now I am amused as well.
