17 Republicans could have just ended their political careers

Cross Posted from The Victory Caucus.

The House just completed voting, and has approved 246-182 the Democrats' defeatist resolution. This was expected: but the good news is, the 40-60 Republican defectors that the Democrats had been predicting failed to materialize. Only seventeen Republicans voted for the resolution --- and two Democrats broke ranks to vote against it.

First, let us recognize the two Democrats who did the right thing:

From CNN:

Senate to vote Saturday

Moving quickly, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, has called a test vote for Saturday on an identical measure, and several presidential contenders in both parties rearranged their weekend campaign schedules to be present. (Watch a change of course in the Senate Video)

Republicans said in advance they would deny Democrats the 60 votes they need to advance the resolution, adding they would insist on equal treatment for a GOP-drafted alternative that opposes any reduction in funds for the troops. (Full story)

The developments unfolded as a new poll showed more than half those surveyed view the war as a hopeless cause.

A sizeable majority, 63 percent, opposes the decision to dispatch more troops, although support for Bush's decision has risen in the past few weeks from 26 percent to 35 percent, according to the AP-Ipsos poll.

So as we start seeing daily progress, the AP-Ipsos poll is showing that support is rising for Bush's new strategy.

Wonder how this backlash is going to hit the Republicans that voted for defeat and the Democrats that have been working for our defeat since well before last November.
