Following the heartbreaking tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School where 20 little children and six adults were murdered in cold blood, there has been much talk of what can be done to prevent this in the future.
One mother took action, Mary Gjertsen called her school officials and demanded that her children be protected when they are at school, by armed personnel that could prevent a mass killing spree like the one in Newtown Connecticut. (H/T Karen Moore @TakeNoMoore)
Following the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, schools were required to keep all doors locked during school hours. This was a great initial step. But as we’ve unfortunately learned, this by itself will not deter a crazed lunatic on a mission.
How about armed personnel for instance? If it costs us a few more tax dollars to guarantee that our children are safe, don’t you think it is worth it? Call me crazy, but maybe, just maybe if armed workers, security guards, or police officers were present, the tragedy as Sandy Hook Elementary may have never happened.
I’ve heard the argument. If we get rid of guns, we get rid of the problem. That’s bull-honky. Let’s unarm the innocent person and school so that a dill weed like Adam Lanza can obtain an illegal weapon and march right into another schoolyard and kill dozens more; all because schools were unprepared. And, in case you didn’t know, there was another attack in a Chinese Elementary school on the exact day of the Sandy Hook tragedy where 22 children were slashed with a knife by another demented individual. Guns are not the dilemma.
So, what do you the parent do now? First and foremost, since you conceived and birthed that amazing creation, you have been called to love and protect that child. Start by making a phone call or emailing your child’s school. Find out what they have decided to do to ensure that your child is safe. If their response is not satisfactory, demand that they take further action. I did. So did many other concerned parents. And when I pulled up to pick up my little laddets from school on Monday, I was thrilled to see that there were ARMED police personnel on the school property.
Kudos to Mary.
[Update] Here is an idea- There are tens of thousands veterans, trained with weapons, already proven to be willing to sacrifice their lives for our nations citizens, get out of the service and can't find a job in this economy...... how about we give them one... protecting our children at their schools.
