When will parents learn to lock up their guns? This is a question being asked by many as news of a 3 year old child that found a loaded gun in her home, shot herself in the head.
The gun belonged to one her parents and there was one parent home at the time of the shooting.
The child was brought to Sinai Grace Hospital, then transferred to Children's Hospital of Michigan, where she was in a critical condition.
The police have questioned the parents and took the gun.
There is a responsibility that goes hand in hand with owning guns and there is an obligation to see to it that loaded weapons are locked up and not within reach of children.
Recently a school in Maryland, the Randallstown Elementary School, saw a first grader bring two loaded handguns into a school because he thought they were toys.
According to the police in that case, the 7 year old found the guns when he was visiting his Uncle and Michael Hill, a Baltimore County police spokesman, told the Baltimore Sun, "They were in his book bag and he completely forgot about them. He didn't realize it until he got to school. He thought they were toys anyway. He put one in his pocket and went to class."
Both of those weapons were loaded with a round in the chamber and a teacher discovered the first gun when the 9 mm Kahr pistol fell to the floor and a further search of the boy's locker turned up a .40-caliber Glock handgun.
