‘They Never Show Up’: Independent Journalist Nick Sortor Says Minneapolis PD Was Missing In Action During Mob Assault
Independent journalist Nick Sortor said Monday that Minneapolis police failed to respond as a hostile mob surrounded his vehicle.
Independent journalists Sortor and Cam Higby fled a mob attack while covering anti–immigration enforcement protests in Minneapolis Sunday, later posting videos of the confrontation on X, which appeared to show a left-wing streamer encouraging the crowd. Sortor on “The Ingraham Angle” said he stayed on the phone with Minneapolis police as the situation escalated, repeatedly warning dispatchers that he faced an imminent threat.
“We were on the phone with Minneapolis police, and I was telling them, ‘You got to get here. You got to get here because I’m not going to have a choice. If they try to disable my vehicle or they break a window, I have to go,'” Sortor told host Laura Ingraham.
Sortor said Minneapolis police failed to respond despite repeated pleas for help.
“You guys need to get here and do something. And of course, they didn’t show up. No, of course not. They never show up,” Sortor added.
Sortor said he gave the crowd ample warning to clear away from his vehicle before the situation turned dangerous.
“I gave them 15 minutes of warning to get out of the way, and I feel like that was more than enough time to, you know, finally disperse out from the front of my vehicle,” Sortor said.
The confrontation took place as Sortor and Higby were covering the protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that intensified following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis on Wednesday.
Sortor has faced similar violence before after anti-ICE rioters attacked him while he covered unrest at an ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, in October, yet officers with the Portland Police Bureau arrested Sortor on a disorderly conduct charge, according to multiple posts on X. “The problem is we’re in Tim Walz’s Minnesota, and every minute we’re here [increases] the risk he’s going to take us as political prisoners,” Sortor posted. Sortor also said he believed Walz would “rather us just die” instead of taking action to stop the rioters.
The Minneapolis Police Department did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
