In a largely symbolic protest over Barack Obama's reelection and the Democratic policies and agenda over the last four years, citizens of seven states have garnered the target number of 25,000 signatures on their petitions to peacefully secede, which is supposed to trigger a response from the Obama administration, according to the White House "We The People" terms of participation.
To cross the first threshold and be searchable within WhiteHouse.gov, a petition must reach 150 signatures within 30 days.
To cross the second threshold and require a response, a petition must reach 25,000 signatures within 30 days.
I say symbolic because petitioning the White House to secede is more to force Obama to respond, a non-violent protest, so to speak, than to actually secede. In order to secede the citizens of the individual states would have to petition, call, email and or visit their state's Governors and politicians and force their hands to start the process.
The seven states with the required number of signatures to date are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
