Modern Day Slavery: It’s Not Uncommon

In his second column for the new MT Weekly (a new digital magazine about politics, sports, the arts, culture and much, much more) Dutchman Max Micha explains what the results are of the legalization of prostitution in the Netherlands.

The short version: it has led to more crime and suffering, and even to downright slavery.

Slavery. It‘s not necessary to reach back in time and write about this in the past, it is still present in our modern society.

When we talk about slavery in the present time, the first thing we can think about is the everlasting abuse of Negroid Peoples by the Arabs in the Middle East. But we don’t need to go that far; it is also happening much closer to home, right under our noses. In Europe and Holland there is a lucrative and vivid network of human trafficking and modern-day slavery where mainly female illegals have to work under appalling conditions in mainly the erotic industry.

Despite the fact that Holland is the first country in Europe with a prostitution law, it doesn’t seem to solve the problems around human trafficking in any way. The erotic industry is a vague and lucrative world in which it is not clear who is working as an independent professional or who works for a pimp. But the more difficult problem is that it is unclear who is illegal in the circuit. The offering through the internet of hotel prostitution and escort services is all over. Any means are used to sell products: in this case, humans.

Meanwhile there have been many TV programs which dedicated episodes to this phenomenon of human trafficking where journalists with hidden cameras are trying to show you a glimpse of this bizarre underworld. But despite all the effort, the police aren’t solving as many cases as we hope for. There are just not enough agents available to work these cases and the EU laws are making everything much more complicated.

The WIC-mentality

Regarding slavery, the Dutch were fairly active in history. Around 1600 AD the first slaves were traded by the Dutch in America and Brazil and later on Suriname and Curaçao. It’s kind of funny to read the Dutch Wikipedia regarding slave trading. I quote: “The WIC did transport slaves in 1635 AD but did not trade slaves (Wikipedia – Piet Hein)”. But slavery was already present in Africa well before the Dutch found out that a lot of money could be earned by trading slaves.
