Generic Presidential Poll: Republican 47%, Obama 39%

Gallup shows the first statistically significant lead in a poll asserting that a generic Republican candidate, the "Republican Party's candidate for president" receives support from 47 percent of registered voters than Obama does at 39 percent.

That lead is higher among Independents, with the Republican candidate coming in ahead 10 percent . (44 percent to 34 percent)

Polling this far away from the presidential election is not indicative one way or another as to whether Obama can or will be reelected, but polls do provide a snapshot on public opinion today as well as providing patterns and trends, which barring a major turnaround, can be predictive of which direction voters are heading in.
