Wikileaks Founder, Julian Assange, Arrested And Denied Bail

British police arrested Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks on a warrant that was issued by Sweden for sex crime allegations, stemming from accusations from two women that accused him of rape back in August.

Julian Assange, the founder of the WikiLeaks Web site whose release of sensitive U.S. documents on the Internet has generated outrage and embarrassment in official circles, was arrested by British police Tuesday morning on a Swedish warrant and faced the prospect of extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.

Assange, accompanied by his lawyer, arrived at a central London courthouse for the start of extradition proceedings on Tuesday afternoon after turning himself in at 9:30 a.m. local time. A scrum of reporters, mixed with supporters holding placards, jammed the street outside. Assange's lawyers planned to request that he be freed on bail pending the result of the extradition proceedings, which could potentially take weeks.

Via the New York Times and others, we see that Assange was also denied bail by a London court.

Judge Howard Riddle told Assange that he had "substantial grounds" to believe the 39-year-old Australian wouldn't turn up for subsequent proceedings. He then put Assange into U.K. custody ahead of an extradition hearing.
