Our founders were a very interesting and insightful lot of folks. Read this letter from Thomas Jefferson to Mr. William Ludlow. It is very acute, to how pertinent these words ring true today. This phrase especially.

"I think, myself, that we have more machinery of government than is
necessary, too many parasites living on the labor of the
industrious."
