Obama's Visit To Las Vegas Hurts Reid More Than Helps Him

Harry Reid is trailing all his potential Republican challengers for his Nevada Senate seat and Barack Obama's visit to Vegas a couple weeks ago, meant to help Reid, actually hurt Reid more than helped him.

The poll commissioned for the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows two candidates vying for the Republican state nomination have widen their leads over Democrat Reid.

Mason-Dixon Polling & Research gave Nevada businesswoman and former state senator Sue Lowden 52 percent to Reid's 39 percent.

In another matchup, Las Vegas businessman and attorney Danny Tarkanian won 51 percent of the vote to Reid's 40 percent.

Las Vegas Review Journal:

A larger percentage of voters surveyed (17 percent) said they would be less likely to vote for Reid following the president's visit than said they would be more likely to vote for him (7 percent). Seventy-five percent said Obama's visit would have no effect on how they vote.

"Reid was not helped, and Obama was not any more popular than he was before he came to the state," said Brad Coker, managing director at Mason-Dixon Polling & Research.

Reid's spokesperson, Jon Summers, claims Obama's visit wasn't intended to give Reid a political boost, but that was exactly the intent when it was planned, and it failed.

With the unpopularity of Obama's previous statements about Vegas by Nevadans and nationally his disapproval rating outweighing his approval ratings, to expect his trip to do anything but harm Reid politically is nothing short of arrogant and unrealistic.

Nationally:

Overall, 45% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President's performance. Fifty-four percent (54%) disapprove.

Strongly approve and strongly disapprove:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 25% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty-two percent (42%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -17
