Obama Following In Bush's Footsteps

Despite the rhetoric Obama spewed during his presidential campaign, it looks like, according to "officials" that Obama is following in George Bush's footsteps and is considering an executive order to hold terror suspects indefinitely.

Wapo broke the story and AP has jumped on it as well, both quoting unnamed sources.

The Obama administration, fearing a battle with Congress that could stall plans to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, is crafting language for an executive order that would reassert presidential authority to incarcerate terrorism suspects indefinitely, according to three senior government officials with knowledge of White House deliberations.

AP:

Stymied by Congress so far, the White House is considering issuing an executive order to indefinitely imprison a small number of Guantanamo Bay detainees considered too dangerous to prosecute or release, two administration officials said Friday.

No final decisions have been made about the order, which would be the third major mandate by President Barack Obama to deal with how the United States treats and prosecutes terror suspects and foreign fighters.

One of the officials said the order, if issued, would not take effect until after the Oct. 1 start of the upcoming 2010 fiscal year. Already, Congress has blocked the administration from spending any money this year to imprison the detainees in the United States — which in turn could slow or even halt Obama's pledge to close the Navy prison in Cuba by Jan. 21.

The administration also is considering asking Congress to pass new laws that would allow the indefinite detentions, the official said.

The left will react in two different ways. Those that will condemn Obama because he "betrayed" them, and those that will excuse anything he does and come up with "excuses" "explanations" or "justifications" as to how this isn't a break with his base, ..... but instead is somehow "Bush's fault."

Should be an interesting weekend and week next week.
