Suspect Arrested 48 Hours After Interpol Issued Appeal For Help

Just 48 hours after Interpol issued a global appeal for help capturing a suspected pedophile, a man named Wayne Nelson Corliss was arrested in Union City, New Jersey.
At the time Interpol made the appeal, the name, nationality and location of the man were unknown. What Interpol did know was they had approximately 100 images in a series of around 800, which are believed to have been taken in Southeast Asia and depict the sexual abuse of at least three boys aged between six and 10 years old.

Interpol posted six different photos of the man online and 48 hours later, as a result of independent tips provided via the Internet to Interpol Headquarters in Lyon by three people living in the United States, the suspected child sex abuser targeted by Interpol’s Operation IDent, launched May 6, was arrested in the early hours of May 8 by ICE Agents.

According to Julie L. Myers who is the Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for ICE, "The arrest made this morning by ICE agents in Newark, of a highly sought child predator suspect, is an outstanding example of international law enforcement partnership to keep children safe both in our countries and around the world. Their work and the incredible response from the public to INTERPOL’s call for assistance made this arrest possible. All who value the safety and well-being of children should be heartened by this success.”

Within 24 hours of the Interpol appeal being listed on their website, they received over 250,000 site visits, which is ten times the normal amount of visits, according to the Interpol website.

After being arrested, Corliss confessed to the allegations of sexually abusing the children and his initial court appearance with be at 2:30 p.m. ET, on Thursday, in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, according to the Department of Justice.

Corliss is charged with producing child pornography, according to prosecutors. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, with a 10-year minimum, if convicted. Other charges could be sought when the case is presented to a grand jury, said Michael Drewniak, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in New Jersey.
