EPA Regulations To Force Dozens Of Power Plants To Close

By Susan Duclos

32 power plants will be forced to close and another 36 will potentially have to shut down because of new EPA regulations.

Via ABC News:

The fallout will be most acute for the towns where power plant smokestacks long have cast a shadow. Tax revenues and jobs will be lost, and investments in new power plants and pollution controls probably will raise electric bills.

Here is a key sentence from the Washington Post:

The Obama administration is attempting to deliver on some key priorities for environmentalists without alienating the business community....

In other words, Obama is sucking up to the environmentalists for the upcoming election year, which is also what many critics believe about his administration's desire to delay a decision on the Keystone Pipeline until after the 2012 elections.

Keystone has Democratic and Republican support on the hill but pits one Democratic voting bloc against another Democratic voting bloc with unions in favor and environmentalists opposed which makes it politically advantageous for Barack Obama to punt the issue until after the 2012 elections.
