CBO Analysis: Boehner Plan Better Than Reid Plan

The Hill reports:

The debt-ceiling plan authored by House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) cuts the deficit by more than the plan by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) if an assumption about war funding is removed from the Reid bill.

Without assuming a drawdown in military activities in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Reid bill only cuts the deficit by $909 billion. That's $8 billion less than the $917 billion Boehner plan. With the war funding factored in, the Reid plan cuts $2.176 trillion over 10 years.

The newly revised Boehner plan has the potential for even greater savings because it would require a balanced budget be enacted. Depending on how it is structured, a balanced budget could require many trillions of dollars in deficit cuts to achieve.

A Republican Study Committee budget would balance the budget in a decade by imposing $9.4 trillion in spending cuts without tax increases.

The Boehner plan, with changes made overnight, is expected to pass the House and Harry Reid has already stated he would kill it in the Senate.

Also, Boehner visited the Senate Republicans and received a standing ovation for the hard work and steady battle he has fought to get a bill that would reduce spending and not raise taxes on Americans.

On a side note, via Gallup, Obama's constant barrage of public speeches attacking Republicans has backfired with voters and he has hot a new low of 40%.

Vote On Boehner Debt-Ceiling Bill, Take Two

Last night the was supposed to vote on House Speaker John Boehner's debt-ceiling bill, but the vote was postponed because of a lack of support for the bill by House conservatives, as written.

Today we see there has been an addition to the bill, language guaranteeing a vote on a balanced budget, which has turned the tide in favor of Boehner's bill and now have many of those that were opposed stating they will vote yes.

House Republicans will link passage of a balanced-budget amendment to Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) last-ditch debt-ceiling plan, which GOP lawmakers said would move the measure to passage in a high-stakes vote later on Friday.

Republican lawmakers voiced confidence the enhanced bill would pass muster with conservatives, as Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) predicted the balanced-budget amendment change would bring 10 to 20 more GOP members on board.

Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), a key holdout, and a Senate candidate, quickly took to Twitter after the meeting to say that he was a yes vote. The conservative Club for Growth also offered a tentative endorsement.

Republican lawmakers say the Boehner framework would still pave the way for the debt limit to be raised through the 2012 election in two chunks. But it would also mandate that the second hike of the ceiling could only occur after a balanced-budget amendment passed both chambers of Congress and went to the states for ratification.

National Journal provides an embedded version of the latest bill's language.

Harry Reid is already threatening to kill the bill in a hostile Senate but with just days to go, that would publicly lay any default squarely on Senate Democrat's shoulders, since they have already killed the Cut, Cap and Balance Act which passed the House earlier this month and included a debt limit increase.

[Update]House passed it as expected and the Senate Democrats killed it.

Anti-Semites In San Francisco Thwarted For Now

By Findalis of Monkey in the Middle

Thus is the Law of Moses and it seems the Law in San Francisco.  So says Judge Loretta Giorgi.
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Loretta Giorgi on Wednesday issued a tentative ruling saying the proposed ballot measure to ban circumcision in the city must be withdrawn, calling it "expressly preempted" by state law.

Lloyd Schofield, 59 year old anti-circumcision activist, was determined to have male circumcision banned by legislation in San Francisco. For starters, he gathered 12,000 signatures, while ony 7,168 are required for the city of 750,000 by the city’s Department of Elections, for his proposal to be placed on the ballet in the November 8th San Francisco elections .

The measure, which would only apply in San Francisco, was intended make it a crime to circumcise a minor, regardless of the parents' religious beliefs. The maximum penalty would be a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

The ban’s campaign material included anti-Semitic comic books depicting a Jewish mohel, or circumcision practitioner, as the sinister villain "Foreskin Man", in the inimitable style of the Protocol of the Elders of Zion and the Nazi Der Sturmer.

According to the Associated Press the plaintiffs of record in the lawsuit filed against the measure included five Jews, three Muslims, two doctors who regularly perform the procedure, the local chapter of the Jewish Community Relations Council and the national Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

Volunteers have been working at debunking the misconceptions about circumcision, citing medical and freedom of religion issues.

Judge Giorgi put the controversy on hold by stating on Wednesday that the California Business and Professions Code prohibits local regulation of medical procedures.

She added that it "serves no legitimate purpose" for an illegal measure to remain on the ballot and ordered elections Chief John Arntz to remove it. According to Arntz, after Sept. 1 it will be difficult to remove the proposal from the ballots because they go to the printers. Ideally, the judge will have issued a ruling by that date, stopping the proposal in its tracks.

If the law is on the ballot and passes, it will run up against an overriding state and/or federal law, so there is no chance of the circumcision restrictions ever taking effect.

Abby Porth, associate director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, said she's delighted the "extreme and hurtful" measure might not even appear before voters.

"The idea we would put doctors in jail for performing a procedure with known health benefits that parents request for their children is outrageous," she said.

“Even if it made the ballot, we don’t believe it would have passed,” Porth said.

So far the courts have stopped this travesty of the legal system from being pushed forward.  But the anti-Semites have stated that they will appeal.  And there is the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.  A court notorious for their extreme liberal views.  Until then, this obscene law will not be on the ballot, will be dead on arrival.

We Didn't Spend Our Way To Our Debt In A Day And We Can't Cut Our Way Out In A Day

"The only bottom line that I have is that we have to extend this debt ceiling through the next election, into 2013"--- Barack Obama

I understand the resistance by certain factions of the Republican party, Conservative Independents and Tea Party supporters to the new debt ceiling increase proposal the House of Representatives are scheduled to vote on tonight, with less spending cuts than many can genuinely be happy with.

Each battle our Republicans in Congress are fighting against Democrats, to keep their promise to the American people and slash our spending habits to get a handle on our massive debt, is being fought to the very end.

We did not get to over $14 trillion in debt in a day, or with one bill or even in a decade of bad decisions, so one proposal, one battle against the decades long bad spending habits in Washington is not going to dig us out of the hole we are in.

The Republican controlled House passed the Cut, Cap and Balance Act, sent it to the Democratically controlled Senate where Senate Democrats killed it by vote along party lines to table it after Obama threatened to veto it.

It would have provided for the debt increase.

Obama, Boehner and other political leaders negotiated but those negotiations imploded as Obama kept moving the goal posts and insisted on tax increases instead of slashing spending by a great amount, which is what Republicans were insisting on.

Throughout this whole battle we have seen play out publicly, we have seen the GOP fight for what the American people have so overwhelmingly said they wanted. For Washington to quit spending more money than our country has.

First Read provides a look into how much the GOP has gotten in this one small battle in the larger war being waged.

But when you take a step back from the hour-by-hour movements in this debate, it’s obvious how much ground the White House and Democrats have conceded. First, they retreated on their push for a clean debt-ceiling raise. Then they retreated on the size of the spending cuts (now both sides say the cuts must equal or exceed the eventual debt-limit hike). Then they backed away from insisting that tax revenues be included in the final package (both the Boehner and Reid plans exclude them). And now it seems that their final line in the sand is insisting that the debt ceiling must -- in one step -- be raised beyond 2012, versus Boehner’s two-step approach, which would guarantee another debt showdown early next year.

Initially the GOP had a clean concept, if Obama wanted a $2 trillion increase in the debt ceiling, then there had to be $2 trillion or more in spending cuts to justify it.

Republicans are not in control of the Senate or the White House though, so that clean concept became impossible to bring to fruition and this one battle does have an end date, the deadline, so the GOP must force as many spending cuts as possible, take their win and prepare for the next battle to fight for more spending cuts.

We did not spend our way to into this debt overnight and one battle is not going to cut our way of this mess.

Fred Thompson, whom I respect greatly, wrote an open letter to the House GOP, published July 26, 2011, which I think everyone should read.

As someone who understands the pressures and difficulties you have been going through, I want to say, “Congratulations.” You won, and so did the country.

Absent some major miscalculations, within the next few days there will be official acknowledgment of what has already happened.

At the beginning of the debt-ceiling debate, a realistic, optimistic outcome essentially would have been this: The Republicans would take the initiative and put their plan before the American people. The debt-ceiling increase would be accompanied by corresponding spending cuts. There would be no new taxes. You would drive a hard bargain in the face of unrelenting presidential and Democratic demagoguery — some of it on national television — drawing the attention and focus of the American people to the truth about our country’s fiscal and economic situation. Sure, people would initially ask, “Why are the Republicans now willing to take this thing to the wire when a debt-limit increase has usually been pro forma?” But at the end of the day, more Americans than ever before would understand what is going to happen to us as a country if we continue our current path.

In this optimistic scenario, President Obama’s duplicity would become apparent, and he’d be politically diminished as a result. With his eyes firmly fixed on his own reelection, his political journey would take him from first, calling for a budget with billions in new spending, to second, demanding a “clean” debt-limit bill with no cuts, to third, a proposal for a “big deal,” including vague promises of trillions in spending cuts, to fourth — in order to ensure that such a deal was never accepted — making a demand for billions in additional “revenues” over and above what he previously agreed to accept.

Still, you would stand firm. The president would have miscalculated, a strategic blunder that, along with his petulance, left him marginalized. Obama would make a transparent scramble to get back to the head of the parade. There would be last-minute plans and rejections, but, at the end of the day, the president and the Senate Democrats would reveal that they are willing to do almost anything to push the debt-ceiling limit past the next election, thereby avoiding having to face the electorate again on this issue.

My friends, within the next few days, all of this will have happened. I respectfully suggest that you rake in your chips, stuff them in your pockets, and tell the dealer to deal the next hand.

There is more if you care to read it, it is worth the click over.

John Boehner will have a vote on another plan tonight, far less cuts that any true conservative would like, but the increase would be shorter so that the country does not default now and breathing room would be provided to try to find some grand bargain before the next debt limit fight.

Senate Democrats are already vowing to kill the Boehner plan, yet the accuse Republicans of wanting to default on our loans? After they have killed every measure the House has passed to address spending cuts and raise the debt ceiling?

Details on Boehner's debt deal plan from Americans for Tax Reform.

  • Extends $900 billion in borrowing authority (roughly enough for the next six months) in exchange for savings of $917 billion over the next ten years. This is a cut of about 8 percent of total expected discretionary spending for half of a year of borrowing authority.
  • Removes outlay caps from the first version of the bill, reducing the amount of money actually going out the door in next year's budget. This limits budgeted spending to two percent annual growth while tightening the amount of actual spending allowed to occur in 2012. This results in savings of $25 billion next year alone.
  • Proves that the House-negotiated FY2011 Continuing Resolution was a good deal for taxpayers - CBO's updated projections to include the deal show it will save taxpayers $122 billion over the next decade. Under the Obama budget, spending would have increased by over $400 billion in the same time.
  • Requires additional real savings of at least $1.8 trillion before the President can request additional borrowing authority.

Barack Obama has stated publicly he would rather this fight not have to be fought again until after the 2012 elections. That is telling. He is more worried about the presidential election than he is acting responsibly and getting our spending under control.

Obama wants a blank check to get him through the elections. He will not get it.

Here is some raw data showing comparisons of Obama's debt increases in his 2 1/2 years as president and past ones.

The Bottom Line

The GOP has fought long and hard, every single bill that comes up that deals with spending and even adding cuts into bills that do not. They are battling against Obama and Democrats for every dollar they can cut. They are doing the job America insisted they do when voters gave them the largest turnover in House seats in over 70 years in the House of Representatives during the midterm elections.

Is Boehner's deal everything we wanted? No. What we want in spending cuts will not get past the Democratically controlled Senate and if it did the Democratic President has said he will veto it.

That is the reality of Washington at this moment.

We can want a different reality but we can only force a different reality in 2012 when 23 Democratic seats in the Senate will be voted on and when the public will have a chance to either remove Obama or continue to let him spend our money like a drunken sailor.

Tea Party Nation Founder: What Washington Has Forgotten

Judson Phillips, founder and chief executive of Tea Party Nation, has taken to the Washington Post opinion pages to remind readers exactly what the Tea Party Nation stands for and the quote of the day definitely has to go to him.

As the founder of Tea Party Nation, I feel confident in saying that the Tea Party understands what so many in Washington seem to have forgotten: We do not have a debt crisis. We have a spending crisis. There is only one way you get to a debt crisis — you spend too much money.

Phillips, in one short op-ed, has brought the whole crisis back to the basics. When you spend more money than you have, you borrow and create debt with interest and end up further and further in the hole.

We hear Obama and Democrats continue to talk about increasing taxes to lower our debt, yet Marco Rubio said it best when he said we don't need new taxes we need more taxpayers.

Cut spending, quit creating an atmosphere of fear for our business owners, (Fear being the word OF the business owners in relation to the Obama administration) so they will spend more, expand and hire more people and Washington would then have a good start on getting a handle on the spending problem we have.

We in the Tea Party understand a basic concept that Washington has forgotten: When you are in a hole, quit digging. Every time we have approached the debt ceiling, we have been told the same thing: If we do not raise the debt limit, it will be the end of the world as we know it. A couple of years later, when we find ourselves facing the same crisis, we’re told the same thing.

The message to Washington is very simple.

Put down your shovels ladies and gentlemen.

Video- John Boehner: Obama "Would Not Take Yes For An Answer'

"The sad truth is that the president wanted a blank check six months ago, and he wants a blank check today. That is just not going to happen."--- John Boehner

Video below:

Text of John Boehner's speech to the American people after yet another round of negotiations with Barack Obama imploded can be found here and Obama's bully pulpit speech can be found here.

Obama has used his bully pulpit six times to bring the case to the American people as he threatened Eric Cantor he would do when Obama told Cantor to not "call his bluff."

Something very disconcerting has happened for Barack Obama, his plan to bring his case to the American people is backfiring on him in a massive way.

Even before last night's dueling Obama/Boehner speeches, polling was showing the more he speaks, the less support he is getting from the public. As we showed yesterday, three separate polls showed the GOP has gained the trust on economic issue over Democrats by a 10 percent margin as well as being trusted more on 9 out of ten issues presented to likely voters, Barack Obama is showing the highest level of Strong Disapproval since last November and the majority of voters have more fear the debt deal being negotiated in Washington will raise taxes too much and cut spending too little.

LA Times' Top of the Ticket's Andrew Malcolm points out that Rasmussen is not the only polling organization showing the decrease in support for Obama.

Now, comes a new ABC News/Washington Post poll with a whole harvest of revelations, among them, strong indications that Obama's liberal base is starting to crumble. Among the nuggets:

Despite those hundreds of billions of blown stimulus dollars and almost as many upturn promises from Joe Biden, 82% of Americans still say their job market is struggling. Ninety percent rate the economy negatively, including half who give it the worst rating of "poor."

Are You Better Off Today Than Jan. 20, 2009?

A slim 15% claim to be "getting ahead financially," half what it was in 2006. Fully 27% say they're falling behind financially. That's up 6 points since February.

A significant majority (54%) says they've been forced to change their lifestyle significantly as a result of the economic times -- and 60% of them are angry, up from 44%

Conservative T-Shirt Store

More:

"More than a third of Americans now believe that President Obama’s policies are hurting the economy, and confidence in his ability to create jobs is sharply eroding among his base," the Post reports.

Strong support among liberal Democrats for Obama's jobs record has plummeted 22 points from 53% down below a third. African Americans who believe the president's measures helped the economy have plunged from 77% to barely half.

Obama's overall job approval on the economy has slid below 40% for the first time, with 57% disapproving. And strong disapprovers outnumber approvers by better than two-to-one.

Yesterday Gallup also found that Obama's job approval rating for the week of July 18-24, tied for the lowest weekly average of his administration at 43%.

Even the media, which recent polling has shown the majority of the public believes is politically biased in their reporting with 2 to 1 saying it favors Democrats, is starting to notice that Obama speaks a good game but has not offered any solutions himself, and that Obama seems to be "out of the loop."

Last week Pew Research polling found that the GOP has gained support from every demographic but Hispanics:

Republican gains/losses:

4 percent gain among all voters
6 percent gain among whites
2 percent gain among blacks
6 percent loss among hispanics

Republican gain among whites broken down by age groups:

10 percent gain among those aged between 18 and 29
6 percent gain among those aged between 30 to 49
5 percent gain among those aged between 50 to 64
5 percent gain among those over 65 years old

Republican gain among whites broken down by income:

2 percent gain among those making $75K or more
7 percent gain among those making $30-75K
10 percent gain among those making $30K or less

The GOP has stood firm on fighting for everything they promised when they campaigned for the 2010 midterm elections and saw the largest gains in net seats in the House of Representatives than has been seen in over 70 years. Cutting spending, showing fiscal responsibility, forcing Obama to stop spending more than we have and fighting to lower our debt and live within our means.

Republicans in the House have passed bills to address these issues, such as the Cut, Cap and Balance Act, which then the Democratically controlled Senate killed by tabling it after Obama threatened to veto it and that bill would have offered the debt limit increase.

The more Obama talks to the public, the more his support erodes and yet as disconnected from reality he is, his stated goal to kick the can down the road until after the 2012 elections, is not resonating well with the voters in the U.S.

Yet he keeps talking...........

The Emperior Has No Clothing!

By Findalis of Monkey in the Middle

Book of Obama: Chapter 13

His Excellency, The Most High, Master of the Nation, President Barack Hussein Obama (May He Reign Forever) spoke to the peons of the population.  None of this problem is MY fault, the Great One exclaimed.

"I blame Bush! He spent $1 Trillion in 8 years. And there was the Recession. We had to spend, spend, spend to Save the Nation. It is the fault of the Republicans. Those nasty TEA Partiers. It is the fault of everyone else. I am your King. Nothing is MY fault. It never is.

We need to make the rich give up their money. The Corporate CEOs with private jets need to give all their money to ME. The Billionaires and Millionaires have too much money, I need it more.  I need much more.

Although I am Omnipotent, I need your help.  If I don't get the debt ceiling raised, the world will come to an end.  The elderly will be forced to eat cat food.   The military will not be paid.  Veterans will starve while being thrown on the street. All this because the evil Republicans with their allies the rich fat cats, will not do as I order them to.

Every President for many years has gotten what I demand.  The Great Reagan spoke thus:
"Would you rather reduce deficits and interest rates by raising revenue from those who are not now paying their fair share, or would you rather accept larger budget deficits, higher interest rates, and higher unemployment? And I think I know your answer."
And yet these evil men will thwart MY plans, MY desires, what I want.  It is very simple.  Without this ceiling raise, we will DEFAULT on our debt.  The nation will be destroyed.  It will not be MY fault!  We have only a week.  I need you to call Congress and demand that they raise the ceiling.  Raise it enough so that We don't have to do this until after November 2012 (So I don't have to bring this up again until I am reelected!). Only you, the Middle Class, the Poor need to do this.  Together We can defeat the rich, the ignorant, the Republicans.

Thank you MY subjects.  I bless you!"
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
-----Thomas Jefferson, Declaration of Independence
Thus the Anointed One spoke to the people.  And they would have listened to Him but for the voice of the House Speaker, Boehner of Tears.  He spoke quietly, passionately, and with a firm voice.  His words bespoke of the truth and the people listened:
"I am not a fat cat, I was just a small business owner before I came to Congress.  I am one of you, the Middle Class, the people who find all of this too complicated to understand.  But it isn't too complicated.  It is as easy as your own home budget.

The President wants us to raise the debt ceiling for the next 18 months. This is so He will not have to face this problem during an election. The President swears that if we don't raise the ceiling the nation will end. We will default on our debts, the old will starve, the military will not be paid and veterans will be homeless. This is a lie. None of this will happen. What will happen is that for the first time the nation will have to live within our means. We will have to cut spending. We will have to trim the fat.

The President refuses to cut the fat, the port, the earmarks. We had a deal, but the President threatened to veto it. We have another deal, but it forces the President to cut spending, and will only raise the debt ceiling for 6 months.

The President is acting childish. He is carrying on a temper tantrum: "Do it my way or face the consequences!" The President can quote Ronald Reagan, but he will never be Ronald Reagan. Nor does he understand what Reagan stood for.

We will call his bluff. The President will be taught the lesson of the Constitutionality of this issue. He will be denied. He believes to be our King. But he forgets. We are Americans! WE HAVE AND WILL HAVE NO KINGS!!!!
And with that, the American people awoke to the truth of the argument.  The did call the Congress telling them to stand firm, don't give in to Obama's demands.  If we can stop him now, he will be destroyed. And they remembered this:
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury.

A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

---Thomas Jefferson, The Declaration of Independence

Yes President Obama has become a Tyrant.  It is time to take down the tyrant.  Call your Congressman or woman.  E-mail him or her.  Let them remember what happened in 2010.  You put them into Congress and you can take them out.  Time is running out. the nation and our freedoms are at risk.  It is time to stop the Tax and Spend culture of the Presidents and Democrats now.

Poll: 2 to 1 Plurality of Voters Say Media Favors Democrats

Not like it is a huge surprise to anyone not living in a state of denial but another poll, this one conducted by The Hill, finds that the majority of voters, 68 percent believes there is media bias in the way news outlets report the news and 46 percent believe that bias favors Democrats with only 22 percent believing it favors Republicans.

Other findings:

The picture is not much brighter on the general question of ethics. Fifty-seven percent of voters think of the news media as either somewhat or very unethical, while only 39 percent see them as somewhat or very ethical.

The findings come as the phone-hacking scandal centered upon the now-shuttered British tabloid News of the World continues to make headlines on this side of the Atlantic. The tabloid was owned by the UK arm of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., and senior U.S. politicians, including Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), have called for an investigation into the company’s activities here.

While negative views of the media are common among all sectors of the electorate, some intriguing patterns emerge deeper in the poll’s findings.

Self-described centrists and liberals, for example, tend to hold a less unremittingly harsh view than conservatives.

The proportion of moderates who believe the news media generally report on politicians in an appropriate way is, at 33 percent, almost twice as large as the 17 percent of conservatives who take the same view.

At the same time, however, centrists tend to think the news media favor one side in their reporting. Thirty-nine percent of centrists endorse the idea that the media favor Democrats while 19 percent think they favor Republicans.

Polls: High Obama Disapproval, Party Trust and Taxes Vs Spending Cuts

Multiple polls from Rasmussen over the weekend show that the GOP has gained the trust on economic issue over Democrats by a 10 percent margin as well as being trusted more on 9 out of ten issues presented to likely voters, Barack Obama is showing the highest level of Strong Disapproval since last November and the majority of voters have more fear the debt deal being negotiated in Washington will raise taxes too much and cut spending too little.

Rasmussen- Trust on issues

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Voters shows that 45% trust Republicans more when it comes to handling economic issues, while 35% put more trust in Democrats. Nineteen percent (19%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

.......

Voters now trust Republicans more than Democrats on nine of those 10 issues. In May, Republicans led on just six issues after being trusted more on all 10 in early January. Two years ago Democrats were trusted more than Republicans on most issues. Still, there are several issues that the parties are close on in terms of trust.

Health care, which voters rank second behind the economy in terms of importance, is an issue the GOP holds a tight 46% to 43% advantage on. Before President Obama was elected, Democrats had a huge advantage on this issue. During Election 2010, the advantage switched to the GOP. In May, the parties were essentially tied.

.......

Taxes are a big part of the debt ceiling debate, and voters trust Republicans more than Democrats by a 46% to 40% margin on that issue.

.......

The one issue Democrats do hold an advantage in trust on is education, 42% to 38%. Nineteen percent (19%) aren’t sure which party they trust more, however.

The parties are nearly tied on the issue of Social Security, with Republicans holding a statistically insignificant 42% to 40% lead. In May, Democrats barely edged the GOP on this issue.

Republicans hold a slight 38% to 35% edge in the area of government ethics and corruption, a reversal from the modest lead Democrats held in May. But 27% of voters don’t know who to trust more on this issue.

On immigration, Republicans hold a sizable 47% to 33% advantage, with 21% of voters are undecided.

.......

As is always the case, Republicans hold the trust advantage when it comes to national security and the War on Terror and the handling of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rasmussen- Taxes and spending cuts

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 62% of Likely U.S. Voters are worried more that Congress and President Obama will raise taxes too much rather than too little in any deal to end the debt ceiling debate. Just 26% fear they’ll raise taxes too little. Twelve percent (12%) aren’t sure. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Similarly, 56% worry that Congress and the president will cut spending too little in the final debt ceiling deal, while only 25% are concerned that they will cut spending too much. Nineteen percent (19%) are undecided.

Rasmussen- Obama Approval/Disapproval

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday shows that 23% of the nation's voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as president. Forty-four percent (44%) Strongly Disapprove, giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -21 (see trends).

That’s the highest level of Strong Disapproval since last November.

......

Overall, 45% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's performance. Fifty-four percent (54%) at least somewhat disapprove.

Once again I will point out that polling, especially this far away from the presidential election, is simply a snapshot of how voters feel at the time and many things can happen to turn the numbers around. At this stage polling is best used to see patterns and trends which a change from one week from another or a bounce stemming from a certain event generally does not alter those patterns or trends in the long run.

Debt Deal Updates- LINKFEST

Plenty of news on the ongoing negotiations regarding the debt ceiling increase Barack Obama has demanded from Congress and the delicate discussions between the two sides of the debate.

So, a linkfest for you!!!

Congress ditches Obama on debt talks ---

First came the Biden talks. When those blew up, the Obama-Boehner talks took center stage. And when that failed, the McConnell-Reid talks looked promising. And after they faltered, the Obama-Boehner talks tried to find a new life.

Now it’s all come down to the Boehner-Reid-Pelosi-McConnell talks to solve the debt crisis. Notably absent? The president.

GOP readies new debt ceiling plan; bill set for Sunday---

House Republicans are finishing work on a new proposal to resolve the standoff over the debt ceiling. The proposal, set to be finished and crafted into the form of a bill by Sunday, will be in two parts. The first will combine a short-term increase in the debt ceiling with spending cuts. The second will lay the groundwork for a longer-term increase in the debt ceiling coupled with far-reaching deficit reduction.

"Senator Reid said on Friday that he is going to wait for us to move," says a well-informed GOP House aide. "So we'll move." Another well-informed aide confirmed the basic outline of what's happening.

Pelosi says leaders looking at two-tiered debt approach---

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Saturday night that congressional leaders are considering a two-tiered approach to raising the debt ceiling and reducing the nation’s long-term budget deficit.

Pelosi reiterated that she backs “a long-term extension” of the $14.3 trillion debt limit, putting her in line with the demands of President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.).

Congressional leaders met for just under an hour in House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) office late Saturday, trying to forge an agreement to slash government spending and raise the debt ceiling by the Aug. 2 deadline.

Reid, however, released a statement that was less than optimistic about reaching an agreement on the timeframe of a deal.

"I hope that Speaker Boehner and Leader McConnell will reconsider their intransigence," Reid said in his statement. "Their unwillingness to compromise is pushing us to the brink of a default on the full faith and credit of the United States. We have run out of time for politics. Now is the time for cooperation.

Since it was Reid and fellow Seante Democrats that killed the Cut, Cap and Balance Act the House passed which did include a debt ceiling hike, perhaps Reid should be a little more honest about who is stopping the deals from going through.

Speaker Boehner: President Obama 'worried about his next election'---

Boehner also criticized President Obama for recommending a debt ceiling deal be timed to last beyond the next election season.

“The president’s worried about his next election, but my God, shouldn't we be worried about the country?” Boehner said. “I'm not worried about the next election. I told the president months ago: Forget about the next election!”

The administration though has indicated that the debt ceiling should be raised at least through 2012, in order to take politics out of the negotiation.

The president said in his speech Friday evening that he would be willing to work on “any plans” that lawmakers brought him over the weekend. “The only bottom line that I have is that we have to extend this debt ceiling through the next election, into 2013,” President Obama said.

No one is naive enough to believe Obama cares about anything but his next election.

Boehner prepared to move debt plan by himself---

House Speaker John Boehner says the short-term measure he plans to announce Sunday to avert a debt limit crisis may not get support from Democratic leaders, but he'll push forward even without such backing.

Responsibility for debt talks shifts to Congress and away from Obama---

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) reasserted his intention to do just that, issuing a statement that didn't even mention the president or the administration.

"[O]ver this weekend Congress will forge a responsible path forward," the Speaker said. "House and Senate leaders will be working to find a bipartisan solution to significantly reduce Washington spending and preserve the full faith and credit of the United States."

And, to emphasize responsibility now lies with Congress, Boehner and congressional leaders held their own meeting at the Capitol Saturday evening.

Happy Reading Everyone!!!!

PS- Just for giggles after obama's comment about Boehner leaving him at the altar:

Help A Fellow Blogger: Datechguy's Blog

A very good blogger with an outstanding blog called Datechguy's Blog, has run into some financial difficulties and if anyone has anything to spare, it would be greatly appreciated I am sure.

To say I’ve had a bit of a run of bad luck is kind of mild. In the space of 10 days 2 of three cars have needed vital repairs at a total cost of over $1,000 (and the repair shop treated me well). I had physical issues with the laptop that cost me a further $150 and a property Tax bill due for another $500 and some doctor bills not covered by DaWife’s new insurance for another $300 bucks.

Put simply I find myself $1800 in the hole with very few reserves left to tap and 10 days to come up with the money without spending the mortgage money also due at the end of the month.

If you have anything to spare, click on over and show him your support or pass along the bleg.

Thanks,

Susan

Video- John Boehner Statement On Debt Talk Collapse

Video below:

The debt talks between Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner collapsed over the issue of taxes, Obama wants to include a tax increase in the deal to raise the debt limit, Republicans refuse to raise them.

Then both Obama and Boehner took to the airwaves. Boehner's comments are in the video above and Obama's can be found here.

Commentary accuses Obama of "trying to talk the markets into a panic"

....He claims to have put $1.5 trillion in cuts on the table, plus $600 billion in entitlement reductions, in exchange for tax increases of the same size. He says Republicans said they would accept a dollar in higher taxes (or “revenue”) for every four dollars in cuts, which isn’t exactly saying “no’” to everything. For their part, Republicans in the House passed their cut, cap and balance bill on Wednesday, and it included an increase in the debt ceiling, so even by his own account his criticisms of the GOP are not accurate.

The Republican controlled House did pass a bill that would raise the limit, but Democrats in the Senate killed it and voted to table the Cut, Cap and Balance Act after Obama threaten to veto it. Showing Obama's petulant, childish statement after Boehner walked out of the talks to be dishonest from the get-go.

H/T to AmSpec we see a report from Reuters showing that Egan-Jones, credit rating agency "has cut the United States' top credit ranking, citing concerns over the country's high debt load and the difficulty the government faces in significantly reducing spending."

I am giving the last word to PJ Tatler:

We’re seeing what happens when someone with zero executive experience gets elected to the most difficult job in the world. Barack Obama is in over his head.

Pew Research Shows GOP Gains Support With All But Hispanics

According to the side by side comparison chart Pew Research shows (will show it below) the GOP has gained ground with all voters except Hispanics since the 2008 elections, but their biggest gains are among younger white voters and those making $30K or less.

Republican gains/losses:

4 percent gain among all voters
6 percent gain among whites
2 percent gain among blacks
6 percent loss among hispanics

Republican gain among whites broken down by age groups:

10 percent gain among those aged between 18 and 29
6 percent gain among those aged between 30 to 49
5 percent gain among those aged between 50 to 64
5 percent gain among those over 65 years old

Republican gain among whites broken down by income:

2 percent gain among those making $75K or more
7 percent gain among those making $30-75K
10 percent gain among those making $30K or less

Overview from Pew:

As the country enters into the 2012 presidential election cycle, the electorate’s partisan affiliations have shifted significantly since Barack Obama won office nearly three years ago. In particular, the Democrats hold a much narrower edge than they did in 2008, particularly when the partisan leanings of independents are taken into account.

Notably, the GOP gains have occurred only among white voters; a 2-point Republican edge among whites in 2008 (46% to 44%) has widened to a 13-point lead today (52% to 39%). In sharp contrast, the partisan attachments of black and Hispanic voters have remained consistently Democratic.

While Republican gains in leaned party identification span nearly all subgroups of whites, they are particularly pronounced among the young and poor. A seven-point Democratic advantage among whites under age 30 three years ago has turned into an 11-point GOP advantage today. And a 15-point Democratic advantage among whites earning less than $30,000 annually has swung to a slim four-point Republican edge today.

Yet, the Republican Party’s growth has been limited in two important ways. First, the steep gains in GOP leaning that helped the party in the 2010 midterms have not continued, as the overall balance of partisan attachments has held steady in the first half of 2011. Second, while more independents say they “lean” toward the Republican Party, the GOP has not gained in actual party affiliation since 2008 – just 28% of registered voters, in both years, call themselves Republicans. Instead, the growth category continues to be political independents, with a record high 34% of registered voters choosing this label in 2011.

Keeping in mind that Obama was elected over John McCain by a 7 point margin, the GOP gains almost across the board should be very concerning to Obama for his reelection hopes heading into 2012. Especially if the GOP nominates a candidate that conservatives can get behind.

Semi-related: CNN finds that Rick Perry, should he decide to toss his hat in the ring, is the first choice Republicans and Independents who lean towards the GOP, are picking.

Democrats Kill Cut, Cap And Balance Act In The Senate

After passage of the Cut, Cap And Balance Act in the House of Representatives, the bill went to the Senate where Democrats proved once again they have no intention of controlling the out-of-control spending in Washington, by killing the Act along a straight party line vote in the Democratically controlled Senate chamber.

The Senate voted 51-46, along strict party-lines, on Friday to kill the House Republicans' "cut, cap and balance" legislation.

The measure would have cut spending by $111 billion in 2012, capped spending over the next decade and prohibited more borrowing until Congress had passed a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution.

In the meantime, progress appeared to be made in the ongoing negotiations between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner but are being jeopardized by Senate Democrats who are reportedly outraged over a lack of tax increases and are bitterly complaining about being left out of the negotiations.

Video- Explosions In Norwegian Capital Oslo: Shots Also Fired At Youth Camp

Two explosions today in Oslo at a Norwegian government building, one of which has been confirmed by U.S. sources as being a massive vehicle bomb. Also reports of shots being fired at a youth camp outside Oslo.

Initial reports said there was one dead and at least 8 injured but further reports are claiming their were are more than the one dead, the total will not be known until the building is searched.

NYT:

At the site of the explosion, police evacuated and roped off the area as tension mixed with shaken fascination. People milled around the area, some snapping photos of the destruction. Store windows were blown out for several blocks around.

While Norway has seen little political violence in recent years, the country is a member of NATO alliance and has a small fighting contingent in Afghanistan. It was one of several countries cited by Ayman al-Zawahri, the Al Qaeda leader, as potential targets for attack. In 2006, Norwegian newspapers reprinted Danish cartoons that angered Muslims by lampooning the Prophet Muhammad. Norway has also historically been a frequent participant in peacekeeping missions and a host for diplomatic talks, including the 1993 Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee of the Norwegian parliament.

The news site VG reported that a man dressed in a police uniform opened fire at the camp. It says several people were injured.

Oslo police chief Anstein Gjengdal said anti-terror units were being sent to the camp at Utoya, outside the Norwegian capital.

Reuters reports that the shots at the youth camp came from a man dressed as a policeman and at least five people were injured.

[Update] BBC is reporting seven dead from the bombings and unconfirmed reports claim 2 dead from the shootings.

[Update] Instapundit reports that "A terror group, Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami (the Helpers of the Global Jihad), issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad.” Turds."

STS-135

By Findalis of Monkey in the Middle

On July 20, 1969 10:56 PM EDT, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr. landed on the Moon.  The fulfillment of a commitment to human space travel by President John F. Kennedy:
For the eyes of the world now look into space, to the Moon and the Planets beyond.

We Choose to go the Moon in this decade and do the other things. Not because they are easy, but because they are hard. Because that challenge is one we are willing to accept. One we are unwilling to postpone and one we intend to win.
John F. Kennedy 12 September 1962 Rice University

It has been 42 years since the first Moon landing and 49 years since President Kennedy spoke those moving words.  Yet recently President Barack Hussein Obama not only cancelled the Constellation program, scrubbing the US return to the Moon and then Mars.  And has saddled the US with an enormous cost to send our astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).  The Russians will do it for $50 million dollars each astronaut.

President Obama claims that his plan will create jobs.  He is right.  Jobs for Russians, not Americans as the people of NASA will be downsizing and 1/3 of the NASA work force will be out of work tomorrow.

Ironic isn't it.  When President Obama first took office he was compared to John Kennedy as the second coming of JFK.  I can now paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen with accuracy:
Mr. President, you're no Jack Kennedy!
Indeed not!  Leadership is not his forte.  He has no idea what it is to inspire an nation, to unite a nation, to make us dream.

I was going to make this post one that would look back on the last 30 years of the shuttle program.  Instead I have changed this into a harangue against Obama's NASA policy.  The typical Progressive policy of destroying those programs that don't give funds directly to his cronies (SEIU).

I will leave you with this last landing ever of the Shuttle:

As the Space Shuttle has pulled into port for the last time, an era has come to an end.

When will America send her best and bravest back into space?  How long will it take?

Home Depot Co-Founder Explains The Damage Of Obama's Economic Policies To Job Creation

"Even brain-dead economists understand that when you raise taxes, you cost jobs."---Bernie Marcus, Co-founder of Home Depot

Today we see another name on the list of businessmen who are explaining the damage Barack Obama's policies of regulations, tax increases and out-of-control spending, is doing to America's economy, unemployment and growth.

Bernie Marcus co-founder of Home Depot, which created hundreds of thousands of jobs, tells Investors Business Daily that the single biggest impediment to job growth today is the U.S. Government.

Marcus: The U.S. government. Having built a small business into a big one, I can tell you that today the impediments that the government imposes are impossible to deal with. Home Depot would never have succeeded if we'd tried to start it today. Every day you see rules and regulations from a group of Washington bureaucrats who know nothing about running a business. And I mean every day. It's become stifling.

If you're a small businessman, the only way to deal with it is to work harder, put in more hours, and let people go. When you consider that something like 70% of the American people work for small businesses, you are talking about a big economic impact.

IBD
: President Obama has promised to streamline and eliminate regulations. What's your take?

Marcus: His speeches are wonderful. His output is absolutely, incredibly bad. As he speaks about cutting out regulations, they are now producing thousands of pages of new ones. With just ObamaCare by itself, you have a 2,000 page bill that's probably going end up being 150,000 pages of regulations.

IBD: Washington has been consumed with debt talks. Is this the right focus now?

Marcus: They are all tied together. If we don't lower spending and if we don't deal with paying down the debt, we are going to have to raise taxes. Even brain-dead economists understand that when you raise taxes, you cost jobs.

Recently it was reported that Democratic Steve Wynn, CEO of casino company Wynn Resorts, stated that Barack Obama's administration "is the greatest wet blanket to business, and progress and job creation" in his lifetime.

And I'm saying it bluntly, that this administration is the greatest wet blanket to business, and progress and job creation in my lifetime. And I can prove it and I could spend the next 3 hours giving you examples of all of us in this market place that are frightened to death about all the new regulations, our healthcare costs escalate, regulations coming from left and right. A President that seems, that keeps using that word redistribution. Well, my customers and the companies that provide the vitality for the hospitality and restaurant industry, in the United States of America, they are frightened of this administration. And it makes you slow down and not invest your money. Everybody complains about how much money is on the side in America.

You bet and until we change the tempo and the conversation from Washington, it's not going to change. And those of us who have business opportunities and the capital to do it are going to sit in fear of the President. And a lot of people don't want to say that. They'll say, God, don't be attacking Obama. Well, this is Obama's deal and it's Obama that's responsible for this fear in America.

The guy keeps making speeches about redistribution and maybe we ought to do something to businesses that don't invest, their holding too much money. We haven't heard that kind of talk except from pure socialists. Everybody's afraid of the government and there's no need soft peddling it, it's the truth. It is the truth. And that's true of Democratic businessman and Republican businessman, and I am a Democratic businessman and I support Harry Reid. I support Democrats and Republicans. And I'm telling you that the business community in this company is frightened to death of the weird political philosophy of the President of the United States. And until he's gone, everybody's going to be sitting on their thumbs.

Before that I published a long comment from a small business owner, A.J. Motes, who explained how Obama and Democrats had blurred the lines between the "rich" and small business owners and how the Democrat's tax increase proposals would cause the lifeblood of our economy, the small businesses, to suffer.

So when politicians are talking about raising taxes on the filthy rich, they want us to think that those nasty old bankers, corporate swells, and union thugs are finally going to get what's coming to them. Unfortunately, these protected groups will be largely immune to the tax and regulatory burden. The real losers will be the small business owners, ordinary folk like you and me who have no means of protecting ourselves against the power of the government.

Don't be fooled by political rhetoric that claims taxes will be extracted from the super rich. It's the small business owner, already suffering in a poor economy, who will be hurt the most.

I wouldn't mind taxes if everyone followed the same rules and if government weren't spending our money on stuff taxpayers don't want. And I really don't like feeling that I have been turned into a slave who works to support the half of America that lives off government subsidies and handouts. Cut government spending first!

These are job creators, employers, the very backbone of our economy and they are explaining quite clearly what Barack Obama's policies have done and are continuing to do to our country.

Obama And Democrats Top Recipients Of News Corp. Donations

When reading the details of the report, keep in mind that News Corp. is the parent company of Fox News, Wall Street Journal and New York Post.

A new report by the Sunlight Foundation shows that political donations by News Corp. employees and their families were almost evenly divided between Republican and Democratic candidates with Democrats receiving 51 percent and Republicans receiving 49 percent.

The top three recipients since 1989 are the names that have surprised many today though, with Barack Obama benefiting the most with News Corp. contributions totaling $368,669, Hilary Clinton receiving $298,525 and John Kerry $157,901.

Out of the top 10, only three (in the bottom five) were Republicans, the other seven being Democrats.

Compare the 51 percent 49 percent division of contributions by News Corp. employees and families with the national average from other media personalities.

2010:

The Democratic total of $1,020,816 was given by 1,160 employees of the three major broadcast television networks, with an average contribution of $880.

By contrast, only 193 of the employees contributed to Republican candidates and campaign committees, for a total of $142,863. The average Republican contribution was $744.

Here is a little more trivia for you:

News America Holdings (PAC), also known as Fox Political Action Committee, top recipients in 2009-2010 according to Influence Explorer:
  • Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca) ($10,000)
  • Howard L Berman(D-Ohio) ($10,000)
  • Chuck Schumer (D-NY) ($10,000)

Fox News is consistently bemoaned by the far left as being conservative, slanted, biased, but according to the political donation figures compared with other media top names and their political donations, News Corp. and the Fox Political Action Committee are far more "fair and balanced", where there is no balance whatsoever in the recipient lists from other networks and publications.

Democratic Steve Wynn: Obama Admin Greatest 'Wet Blanket' To Business, Progress And Job Creation

The other day I published comments from a small business owner who explained how the Obama administration tax increase proposals would cause suffering and perhaps financial ruin for small business owners.

Today we see the POV of a huge business owner, who explains how damaging Barack Obama's administration has been to business, progress and job creation.

H/T to Business Insider for linking to Seeking Alpha who provides a transcript of a quarterly conference call where Steve Wynn, the CEO of casino company Wynn Resorts, lays into the Obama administration and pulls no punches.

For the record... Wynn calls himself a "Democratic" businessman.

I believe in Las Vegas. I think its best days are ahead of it. But I'm afraid to do anything in the current political environment in the United States. You watch television and see what's going on on this debt ceiling issue. And what I consider to be a total lack of leadership from the President and nothing's going to get fixed until the President himself steps up and wrangles both parties in Congress. But everybody is so political, so focused on holding their job for the next year that the discussion in Washington is nauseating.

It doesn't get any more blunt than that.

Gallup- 55% to 35%, Majority More Concerned About Lack Of Spending Cuts In Debt Battle

Gallup shows Americans want some type of compromise in the debt ceiling battle but lower into the Gallup poll it shows that by a 20 point margin, 55 percent to 35 percent, the majority "say they worry more that the government would raise the debt ceiling without plans for major spending cuts, than that the government would not raise the ceiling and an economic crisis would ensue."

The question: Which concerns you more: The government would not raise the debt ceiling and a major economic crisis would result, or the government would raise the debt ceiling but without plans for major cuts in future spending?

55 percent of respondents are more concerned about the lack of spending cuts than about any crisis that would result in no debt limit increase.

Bottom Line

Americans would like their representatives in Washington to compromise and get a debt agreement in place before the Aug. 2 deadline, but at the same time are concerned that any such agreement include major spending cuts.

Now, answer it out loud folks.. which party is fighting very publicly for spending cuts and which party is fighting against making those cuts?

Fact Of The Day: Total Direct Revenue Rose After Bush Tax Cuts Enacted

The Washington Examiner provides a piece discussing the ongoing debt limit battle, which is a must-read, but one specific fact in that article is something everyone needs to see and pass around.

"Everybody talks about how much the Bush tax cuts cost, and we're saying, no, they led to a huge increase in revenue," says the Republican involved in the fight. It's true. According to historical tables published by the Office of Management and Budget, government revenue shot higher after the Bush tax cuts were enacted. Total federal government receipts rose from $1.782 trillion in 2003 to $2.567 trillion in 2007 -- an increase of $785 billion, or 44 percent. In 2007, the federal deficit shrank to $160 billion -- all after tax cuts that Obama and his Democratic allies portray as disastrous.
